CABANATUAN CITY, Nueva Ecija -- Drivers and operators of passenger jeepneys in this province did snubbed the nationwide transport strike spearheaded by the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston).
The drivers said they opted to ply their usual routes in order to meet their families’ needs.
"My family will have nothing to eat if I stop the trip," Nelson, a driver plying the Cabanatuan-San Jose route, explained when asked why he went to work despite the transport strike.
He, however, admitted that he and his fellow drivers had "very little" income on Monday as there were few passengers.
Malacañang on Sunday declared the suspension of government work and classes at all levels in both public and private schools nationwide to minimize public inconvenience arising from the planned nationwide transportation strike.
Jeepney associations led by Piston have been protesting the proposed public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program of the government.
Based on the program, public utility vehicles that are over 15 years old will be banned from the national highways and will be replaced with “low-carbon and low-emission technology” vehicles. (PNA)
