MANILA, Philippines – Philippine police were searching for a maid suspected of conspiring with robbers accused of killing two film critics, a Slovenian and her Filipino-Canadian boyfriend, officials said Thursday.
The newly hired maid allegedly led three gunmen Tuesday night into the suburban Manila home of Nika Bohinc, 30, and Alexis Tioseco, 29, who walked in on the robbery and apparently startled the intruders, police said.
The gunmen shot the couple several times, killing them instantly, police said in a report.
Before the couple returned home, the robbers tied and gagged another maid and gathered the victims' belongings, including two video cameras and several bottles of wine, police said.
They left the belongings behind after the shooting and fled in the couple's car, which they abandoned nearby, police said. Some other items from the house may still be missing and Tioseco's relatives were taking an inventory, said Chief Superintendent Elmo San Diego, the police district chief.
"We're still looking for the maid because apparently she was the one who let the suspects in," San Diego said.
Bohinc and Tioseco were members of the International Federation of Film Critics. Bohinc, who lived in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana and Manila, wrote for a Web site on collaboration between independent filmmakers in Europe and Asia. She was a former editor of the Slovenian film magazine Ekran and a board member of several festivals.
Tioseco was the founder and editor in chief of Criticine.com, an online journal of Southeast Asian cinema, and was a regular contributor to several other publications. His friends described him as a champion of Philippine cinema and instrumental in bringing local films to the international scene.
Violent crime, including robberies and kidnappings, is common in Manila.
