The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has kicked off its evaluation process on the qualifications of the new salvage firm being considered to undertake the removal and/or retrieval of the capsized M/V Princess of the Stars wreck in Romblon.
CV Gaspar Salvage and Lighterage Corporation filed on December 16 its application to secure a permit and salvage operations of the ill-fated vessel.
However, Commander Allan dela Vega, PCG Maritime Safety Services Officer (MSSO), said the PCG has to conduct a review on the qualifications of the salvaging firm before it would be allowed to undertake the third - and final phase- which is the removal of the M/V Princess of the Stars which capsized and sank near the Sibuyan Island in Romblon on June 21, 2008 after it was buffeted by waves and strong winds.
It could be recalled that Sulpicio Lines Inc. (SLI) sold the wreck of the MV Princess of the Stars to Royal Jessan Petromin Resources Inc (RJPRI).
The ship-breaking RJPRI eventually hired CV Gaspar to undertake the last and third phase.
SLI earlier tapped the salvage firm Harbor Star to undertake the first and second phase - removal of the toxic chemicals, bunker fuel and dead bodies inside the capsized vessel. - source: PNA
