LEGAZPI CITY, Aug. 9 ---- The people of the "happy" island province of Catanduanes has regained a peaceful life since the discovery of the "shabu" laboratory in Virac town in November 2016, as shown in the latest index crime statistics, according to a police official today, Wednesday.
P/Senior Insp. Dexter Panganiban, Virac Municipal Police Station (MPS) deputy chief of police, in an interview said the number of index crimes which are serious in nature decreased from 160 crimes for the period of January-July 2016 to 92 crimes in the same period this year.
The Virac MPS personnel have done their best with diligence and dedication to their respective duties, resulting in notable accomplishments, Panganiban added.
Crime solution and crime clearance efficiencies of the station is also up this year by more than 10 percent.
"These were a result of the intensified, scientific and near surgical operations conducted by the Virac MPS, support of the local government of Virac and other members of community," the police official said.
Most notable are the decrease in robbery, from 20 cases last year to only 9 cases this year and the drop in theft incidents from 121 cases last year to only 65 this year.
This can be attributed to the deployment of personnel in strategic areas based on the "crime incident reporting analysis system" or CIRAS-Generated Crime Map and Crime Clock --- the provision of new patrol vehicles and other equipment, Panganiban said.
He added that the Crime Clearance Efficiency showed an uptrend as 196 out of 484 incidents for the period were cleared. This is 16.18 percent more than the Crime Clearance Efficiency in the same period of last year.
Panganiban said a crime is considered as "cleared" when at least one of the offenders has been identified, there is sufficient evidence to charge him or has been charged before the prosecutors or in court.
While crime is considered as "solved" when one of the perpetrator has been identified, case filed before the prosecutor and suspect has been arrested--- this is considered as "solved cases", he added.
The Crime Solution Efficiency also showed a positive trend as 178 incidents out of the 484 incidents were solved. This is 14.55 percent higher than the Crime Solution Efficiency during the period last year. (Jorge Hallare/PNA)
