TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Aug. 9 -- Bohol Governor Edgar Chatto on Tuesday night said the illuminated ASEAN lantern here is viewed by the resilient locals as symbol of unity amid the challenges faced by the province.
During Tuesday night's lantern-lighting ceremony to join the country in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the Panglao Town Plaza fronting the iconic town watchtower, the governor said the light symbolizes the hope and aspirations of the Boholanos as it is symbolic of unity.
The lights of the lanterns represent the unity of various peoples and cultures of the regional bloc. For the Boholanos, it also symboloizes their own unity which is their key attribute, and the reason why despiote challenges, "Bohol remains a force to reckon with," he said.
For her part, Panglao Mayor Nila Montero said the activity symbolizes the role of ASEAN as the light that guides the group of nations in the pursuit of regional peace and prosperity.
Panglao joined the over 70 areas in the Philippines that celebrated the ASEAN anniversary with a lantern-lighting ceremony. The lantern used in the event was locally-made.
A fireworks display followed the switching-on of the lantern lights.
The Loboc Youth Band Ambassadors entertained the modest crowd gathered at the town plaza.
