ILOILO CITY-- A simulation activity on oil spill response was conducted Friday to highlight the Maritime Week celebration in Western Visayas.
Spearheaded by the joint personnel of Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) 6, Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) 6 and Coast Guard Station in Iloilo, the search and rescue operation and oil spill containment and recovery was conducted at the Iloilo River. It aims to enhance response capability to oil spill.
In an interview, PCG Iloilo commander Lieutenant Ramil Palabrica said the activity also prepared them on how to control, mitigate, recover and rehabilitate in the event there is an oil spill in the Iloilo River and other coastal areas in the region.
Palabrica said that four floating assets were deployed during the two scenarios of the simulation activity.
It included DF-7 that served as the vessel in distress and two aluminum and one rubber boats that acted as rescuers.
Personnel of Coast Guard Special Operations Group and Marine Environmental Protection Unit in Western Visayas showcased their capability in both scenarios as rescuers.
Meanwhile, the Coast Guard Medical Service and students from St. Therese MTC Colleges provided their medical expertise by demonstrating basic life support and administering first aid to victims during the search and rescue scenario.
The Maritime Week celebration kicked off in the region last September 25 and will end September 30. “Connecting: ships, ports and people” is the theme for the weeklong celebration.
The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) is spearheading the celebration in partnership with PCG, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), maritime universities in the region, maritime associations and among other maritime industry partners.
The National Maritime Week is celebrated by virtue of Proclamation No.1094, which consolidates the holding of the National Seafarers Day (NSD), National Maritime Day (NMD), and National Maritime Week (NMW) for a more significant and inspiring celebration. (PNA)
