BFAR re-opens Davao Gulf to large-scale fishing
« on: May 03, 2020, 05:02:39 PM »
DAVAO CITY -- After a three-month season closure, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR 11) opened on Thursday the Davao Gulf to small to large-scale fishing activities.

The closed season from June to August is the spawning period of small pelagic fishes that BFAR implemented four years ago, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Interior and Local Government through Administrative Order (JAO) No. 02 “Establishing a Closed Season for the Conservation of Small Pelagic Fishes in Davao Gulf.”

The implementation of the Davao Gulf Closed Season is also a joint effort of different stakeholders, partner agencies, and seaborne personnel.

It is considered as a major component for the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan or MMK Program of DA-BFAR initiated by Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol under the management of DA-BFAR Director and Undersecretary Eduardo B. Gongona (PCG Ret).

With MMK’s run, coastal communities are encouraged to become good examples of clean and improved coastal communities as well as enhancing and preserving their coastal resources and wildlife through the process.

Strict law enforcement and measures on seas are also observed during the Closed Season of Davao Gulf. It is considered as another supplementing criteria for MMK.

BFAR 11 has recorded two apprehensions from Jose Abad Santos, Davao Oriental for violations accounted as unauthorized fishing, use of active gear, employing of unlicensed fisher and unlicensed fishing gear during this month of August yet both cases are pending for filing of necessary documents from the local government unit of Davao Oriental.

Meanwhile, partner agencies such as government law enforcement agencies, local government units, associated academe and other non-government units shall be awarded with plaques and certificates through their meritorious works displayed during the observance of the Davao Gulf Closed Season this year.

Through the onset of the Davao Gulf Open Season, small-scale to large-scale fishing activities are anticipated to soar per quantity of catch as compared to last year’s previous quarter.

Last year, BFAR 11 documented an increase of 9.5 percent in fish catch from Davao Gulf in 2015 due to the strict implementation of the closed season, especially in the increase in aquaculture and marine municipal sub-sectors.

The projects, alongside strong law enforcement group, are being implemented in the region. BFAR is also currently embarking on Basil, “Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa”, which aims to revive rivers, lakes, streams and other bodies of water which are home to some fishes but are destroyed due to human activities.

BFAR 11 is also plotting possible sites to re-establish and improve the current conditions on certain bodies of water which are yet to be identified by the regional fishery offices and local government units in Davao Region. (ASP/PNA)
