ILOILO CITY – Four of the five health workers in Western Visayas who tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) have recovered, the Department of Health-Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) 6 (Western Visayas) said on Thursday.
Five health workers composed of three doctors, one nurse, and one radio technologist were confirmed to have been infected by the virus, Dr. Renilyn Reyes, head of the DOH-CHD 6’s Public Health Program Development said in virtual presser.
Two of the health workers with confirmed Covid-19 case are from this city, two are from Iloilo province, and one is from Aklan. “Four have recovered while one is awaiting result,” she said.
The health worker, whose repeat test for Covid-19 is yet to be released, is currently asymptomatic.
Reyes cleared that none among the five have contracted the sickness during their duties in health facilities.
“These five cases are not related in taking care of Covid-19 patient. There is a huge chance that they got the infection outside Western Visayas. Four have history of travel and one has exposure to a person who traveled outside Western Visayas,” she said.
The latest onset of sickness among the five is dated April 3 while the earliest reported was March 10.
“The onset of illness is already far so it is possible that the cause (of infection) is the travel or exposure (outside the region),” she said.
She said the regional health office recorded 109 contacts of the five, in which 63 were tested for Covid-19.
Of those tested, 49 turned out negative; one was positive and was identified as a household member of one of the health workers; while the rest are awaiting results.
She said the DOH gets different data specific on health workers as doctors, nurses, and other health workers are in the front-line in managing Covid-19 cases.
“The DOH recognizes the benefits of our health workers,” she said.
Meanwhile, Reyes said that there is no additional case of Covid-19 in Western Visayas on Thursday.
The cases are still at 55 with Iloilo having the most number of Covid-19-positive cases with 18. (PNA)
