Benjamin Abalos Sr. on Monday afternooon announced his resignation "effective immediately" from the chairmanship of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), gleefully reiterating that by his detreactors naming him as the government's "sacrificial lamb" in the nearly-botched broadband telecoms deal with China, his "innocence"s is affirmed.
Abalos made his bombshell announcement before a multitude of supporters--mostly residents of Mandaluyong City which he once served as mayor--who attended a Catholic mass held at his private residence.
"I am resigning the chairmanship of the Comelec effective immediately," he said in a prepared statement to the press, adding that "it is not an admission of guilt for any wrongdoing" ascribed on him as regards the alleged Php 200-million and US$ 10-million bribes in connection with the controversial national broadband network (NBN) deal with the Shenzen-based ZTE Corp. of China.
