DILG: Pres. Duterte's drive against illegal drugs tops agenda of Barangay Assembly Day
MANILA, Oct. 4 (PNA) --The Department of Interior and Local Government said Tuesday that the Duterte administration's campaign against illegal drugs will be the top agenda on the first wave of Barangay Assembly Day on Sunday.
“Barangays are the first line of defense to lead the fight against illegal drugs. Communities are more familiar of the peace and order situation in their area,†said DILG secretary Ismael Sueno.
Sueno said that since one of the top priorities of President Rodrigo Duterte is the campaign against illegal drugs, barangay officials should discuss with their constituents how they can help in eradicating this pervasive social menace in their respective areas.
In line with this, he directed punong barangays to discuss their compliance with national laws and issuances such as revitalization of the Barangay Anti-Drug Action Council (BADAC) and their roles in drug clearing operations.
“We call on barangays to re-activate their BADACs and do their functions consistently such as gathering, updating, and reporting all drug-related data and information in their neighborhood,†said Sueno.
He also said that punong barangays must declare a substantial appropriation from their annual budget for anti-illegal drugs programs, projects and activities in accordance to Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 or Republic Act No. 9165.
The second Barangay Assembly Day for the year themed “Para sa Isang Tunay na Pagbabago, Mag-MASID at Makiisa sa Isang Maka-MASAng Asembleya†is to be conducted in 42,036 barangays in the country.
The conduct of Barangay Assembly Day is pursuant to Republic Act 7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code of 1991, states that '‘the barangay assembly shall meet twice a year to hear and discuss the semestral report of the Sangguniang Barangay concerning its activities and finances as well as problems affecting the barangay.’' (PNA)
