Veteran solon files measure that will exempt senior citizens from paying travel tax

MANILA - A veteran lawmaker on Monday has filed a measure that will give all senior citizens to be exempted from travel tax and terminal fees at all airports and seaports on both domestic and international travel.
BUHAY Party-list Rep. Lito Atienza filed House Bill 5997 that will afford the country’s more than six million senior citizens the opportunity to travel and see all the beautiful sights and historical landmarks in our country, as well as tourist destinations abroad that they have not been able to visit due to financial constraints.
“Our senior citizens have spent the most productive years of their lives working and contributing to the country’s economy in general, as well as to the development of their respective communities, in particular. It is but right that we give back to our senior citizens and encourage them to travel while they are still strong enough to do so,†Atienza said.
“This is a very timely incentive for them to travel and be our country’s very own tourism ambassadors—to enjoy travelling across the country and different parts of the world and to help promote our major tourist attractions such as the underground caves in Palawan, the Chocolate Hills in Bohol, and the world-famous beaches of Boracay, to name a few,†he added.
The former Manila mayor had always strongly advocated for granting benefits and privileges for our lolos and lolas starting with his “Mahal Ko Si Lolo, Mahal Ko Si Lola Foundation†in 1976.
It paved the way for the passage of the Senior Citizens Law which grants discounts on medicines, groceries, transportation and even movies. (PNA)
