ILOILO CITY, Aug 8 -- A multi-sectoral forum and exhibit of traditional costumes by member-states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Wednesday was held at the West Visayas State University (WVSU) in this city as part of the 50th year founding anniversary of ASEAN.
The activity was facilitated by the Regional Association of National Government Executives (RANGE), Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and the West Visayas State University (WVSU) “for people to focus on ASEAN and what it would bring to our national life,” said PIA regional director Atty. Janet Mesa.
“We are holding this exhibit to highlight the uniqueness of these traditional ASEAN costumes and for people to have a better appreciation of ASEAN and ASEAN-member states,” she said.

"Each ASEAN-member state is unique but in our differences we are also one. Today, ASEAN is partnering for change, engaging the world,” Mesa added.
Mesa explained that the conduct of such activity was in support to the all-out information campaign as per Memorandum Circular Number 6 of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) to “help spread awareness on ASEAN.”
In addition to fora and exhibit, PIA also mounted 26 information kiosks in airports, seaports, malls and conducted two ‘Kumpas Barangay.”
To recall, Western Visayas was chosen to host four senior official meetings to include Inter-governmental Commission of Human Rights and on Migrant Workers and 23rd Meeting of ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission and Human Rights in Boracay Island and the 22nd Socio Committees for the ASCC and 17th ASEAN SOCA Council Meeting in Iloilo City.
The region also hosted two high ministerial level meetings that were held in Boracay and Iloilo.
The regional bloc was established through the signing of the ASEAN Declaration in Bangkok, Thailand on August 8, 1967 by founding fathers Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Other ASEAN members are Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar and Cambodia.
It was created to “accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality and partnership,” Mesa added. (PNA)
