PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan -- The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Palawan is expected to approve a proposed ordinance that will grant PHP10,000 and other privileges to centenarians in the province.
Board Member Cherry Pie Acosta, main author of the resolution, said it is essential to grant “Centenarian Gift” in the said amount in recognition of their longevity and PHP2,000 each every birthday provided they submit required documents.
“This ordinance shall be known as Palawan Centenarian Ordinance of 2017, and shall cover those residing in the province who have reached 100 years old and above,” Acosta said.
The implementation of the proposed ordinance will be led by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) in coordination with the Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) and the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) of the 23 towns in Palawan.
The beneficiaries will qualify if they are listed to the PSWDO by their respective MSWDOs with documents and general intake sheets.
The centenarian gift is a one-time cash award that will be taken from available funds of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as included in the General Appropriations Act (GAA).
A plaque of recognition will also be awarded to the living centenarian, and the PHP2,000 birthday cash gift every year that his/her birthday is celebrated.
She said the ordinance, which is co-authored by all Sangguniang Panlalawigan members, is in compliance with Republic Act 10868 known as the Centenarian Act of 2016, honoring and granting additional benefits and privileges to Filipino centenarians.
Acosta further cited that under Section 1, Paragraph D of Republic Act 9994, the provision of additional cash incentives “will encourage the centenarians’ families and their communities to reaffirm the valued Filipino tradition of caring for the senior citizens.” (PNA)
