ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has shipped heavy equipment to Iligan City in preparation for the rehabilitation of Marawi City, a top military official announced.
Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr., Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) chief, said the heavy equipment, consisting of two pay loaders and two back hoes, arrived on Saturday at the port of Iligan City from Manila.
Galvez said the equipment belong to the Army engineers and the Navy Seabees and were shipped aboard BRP-Lanao del Sur.
Galvez said the equipment will be used in the rehabilitation phase of the embattled Marawi City.
“With the arrival of these equipment, we can now proceed with the reconstruction of iconic structures which were damaged due to the fighting,” he said.
He said the equipment will also be used during the construction of temporary houses for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sagongsongan and in other shelters that will be identified.
He said the heavy equipment will be temporarily stored at Balo-i area so that it will be in close proximity to Marawi City when the construction work starts.
The national government has earmarked billions of pesos for the rehabilitation of Marawi City destroyed by the fighting between government forces and Maute group. (PNA)
