WITH the yuletide season just a few days away, the Department of
Transportation and Communications has reactivated its program "Oplan
Isnabero" to protect commuters against erring and abusive drivers of
taxis and other public utility vehicles.

According to DOTC spokesman and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory (LTFRB) Board Chairman Thompson Lantion, DOTC Secretary
Leandro Mendoza has given him and Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief
Reynaldo Berroya the go-signal to strengthen operations against drivers
who will deny passengers and those refusing to use their taxi meters.

"Although the program is being implemented whole year round, we need
to intensify the campaign this Christmas season where most of the
people go on shopping and going around place," Lantion explained.

Lantion said the LTFRB-Franchise Enforcement Group will join forces with
the LTO-Law Enforcement Section-Flying Squad to apprehend all abusive
drivers that will take advantage of the situation.

Lantion added that the LTFRB and LTO would also coordinate with the
local government and PNP-Traffic Management Group for the
synchronization of their operations.

The DOTC will deploy its law enforcement units along shopping malls,
commercial centers, popular nightspots as well as bus terminals.

Lantion also called on transport operators to remind their drivers to
comply with the law and avoid taking advantage of the passenger because
the LTFRB will not be easy on them.

"I know the situation of our drivers in the public transport sector
but it should not use as a reason for them to commit illegal acts,"
the LTFRB chairman said.

Commuters who will be victimized by abusive drivers can go to designated
DOTC-LTO-LTFRB- PNP-TMG desk in malls or they can also simply text DOTC
at 7890 and LTFRB hotline 1342 and LTO hotline at 9219072.
