Abu Sayyafs kill Filipino Soldiers in Ambush
« on: August 09, 2007, 04:48:54 PM »
Nine Philippine soldiers were killed when militants ambushed a convoy of troops on the volatile southern island of Jolo, the military said.

The ambush happened in the early morning as the troops went to a market near the town of Maimburg.

Military officials blamed the Islamic militant group Abu Sayyaf for the attack.

Abu Sayyaf is thought to have links with both al-Qaeda and the regional militant group Jemaah Islamiah.

Two other soldiers were injured in the ambush, military officials said.

Helicopters were being used to ferry in reinforcements and evacuate the casualties, a military spokesman told Reuters news agency.

Thousands of Philippine troops are based in Jolo, some 950km (600 miles) south of the Philippine capital, Manila.

They have been fighting Islamic militants holed up in the island's mountainous terrain for several months.

Abu Sayyaf is the smallest of four Muslim rebel groups in the Philippines, and is only thought to have about 400 members.

It has been blamed for various kidnappings and bombings, including an attack on a ferry in 2004 that killed more than 100 people.

Full Assault!! AFP needs to allow the United States to have an active role in fighting these bandit insurgents, IMO. USAF will obliterate their hideouts with strategic bombers and attack fighters. Or launch a total naval assault via surface to surface missile battery systems.

KILL EM ALL! Death to these murderous islamfascists!

Then after that, another generation of abu sayyaf will rise! You can not extinguish fire by using another fire. As long as their motives and purposes are within them, they will not stop.

I understand that, but if the USAF is allowed to assist the AFP in fighting these bandits, so to should be the focus in rebuilding war torn regions, and increase propaganda activities against secessionism and anti-islamofascism. The government should also focus in colonizing Mindanao and surrounding islands--increasing the catholic background and Filipinization of the region. This is a demographic importance--I say government motivate people in Luzon and in the Visayas to relocate in Mindanao with government subsidies--thereby relieving the congestion in Metro Manila and in Metro Cebu. As well it will help in the assimilation of Muslim mindanao into the mainstream Catholic/Christian philippines.

The key problem here is that Manila provides insufficient funds to the south--there's a lack of medical care, education, commerce and development.  Of course the population will be prone to develop anti-government tendencies. The creation of permanent US bases in the south will allocate funds to the region and will definately help in developing of the region--providing jobs and increasing the standard of living in those areas. As a result, militant ideals will decrease.

However, I do believe that there needs to be a military assault on present rogoue organizations such as the MILF and Abu Sayaff. Think about it this way, developing countries will see the Philippines as an active member in the war against terrorism. And the annihilation of these rogoue groups (including the terrorist NPA) will strengthen Philippine standing in the region. Developing our defense sector and deploying them against the enemies of state will motiviate external bilateral and multilateral investment by showing that the Philippines means business and able to hold its own ground.

Third. Allowing the United States to cooperate with the AFP will strengthen Philippine-American strategic relations and will safeguard the Philippines from any external threat, les they dare mess with the strongest military and economic super power in human existance.

I say go for it.

These are similar tactics in which our southern giant utilized, as in Indonesia. Indonesia induced the assimilation of its vast territory by inducing malays in congested Java and Sumatra to relocate in Sulawesi, as well as Irian Jaya. They are "Indonesianizing" or "Malayifying" regions that have minority groups and are of a different ethnic group and bringin them into the fold of mainstream Indonesian society.

The same can be said in what Thailand does in stressing the importance of centarl Thai culture and customs in its northern and north eastern and southern provinces. So to must the Philippines. If we are to finally silence the clamor of the minority groups, we must pull them into the majority and make them part of the majority. THis will take time, but in 3-4 decades, it will be manifested.

Yea I saw that movie, and it is true. Even here in the United States, though politicians talk about "ceasing the war in Iraq and abroad", that is just a load of horse dung considering the history of the US. It was created out of war, against the tyrrany of British colonial rule. And war stimulates American industry--billions if not trillions are made by the defense industry. As we speak, this so called "War Against Terrorism" is used as a patriotic call by American patriots, but is also an excuse for the United States to order creation of 4th-5th generation air craft carriers, nuclear submarines, attack and fighter aircraft (F-22 raptor, F/A-18 SuperHornets, F-35 JSF etc) as well as the order of thousands of more Abrams tanks, Artillery pieces, missiles etc. Everyone profits. The defense industry profits because foreign militaries order thousands of American military pierces---thus stimilating the economy and at the same time reinforces American interests in the world.

I say the Philippines should TAKE ADVANTAGE of the situation. By inviting the Yanks to the Philippines to build a lease base, which I know the United States will accept immediately considering the strategic location of the Philippines: its within 500 miles from China, 100 miles from Taiwan, 500 miles from Singapore, Its within the border of the South China Sea, Sea of Japan, the Pacific Ocean and local to the Indian Ocean. The United States will bring hundreds of air fighters, tanks, artillery pieces, and naval ships to the Philippines---the Philippines can demand some paymet as in "American gifts"  of F-16s, F-15s, F-14s to strengthen the outdated Philippine Air Force--and American donation of US Cyclone missile fast attack ships as well as American corvettes and frigates to strengthen the Philippine Navy. Why this would be the largest foreign source of investment since the 'Yanks will pour billions upon billions of dollars to the region.

Look at Taiwan, S. Korea, Japan, Turkey: They host American military bases and are given "American gifts" of squadrons of excess American F-16s, F-15s, American naval ships etc. Why shouldn't we do the same? I say we should take advantage of the situation and use it for our the good of the Philippines and the further development of the Republic.

There are more than 9,000 bills pending in the Senate.

The Philippines has more laws than its population (exaggeration intentional). :)

15 More Filipino Soldiers Killed by MNLF in Jolo, Sulu
« Reply #10 on: August 10, 2007, 12:16:25 PM »
source: BBC News

More than 50 people have been killed in clashes between troops and Islamist militants in the southern Philippines, military officials say.

The fighting, on Jolo island, began on Thursday when militants ambushed a military convoy, killing 10 soldiers.

Fifteen more soldiers died in later gun battles, and at least 27 militants were killed, the military said.

It blamed Islamic militant group Abu Sayyaf and rogue elements in the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).
