LOS BAÑOS, Laguna – The “Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE) 2017” under the auspices of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through its Calabarzon regional office here, is slated October 11 to 13 at the Robinsons Place in Dasmariñas City to spur technology adoption, stimulate innovations and promote Filipino inventions.
Dr. Alexander R. Madrigal, DOST Calabarzon regional director, told PNA here on Monday that “RICE 2017” was originally scheduled last Sept. 13 to 15 but rescheduled due to “Typhoon Maring” which affected Calabarzon comprising the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon.
The RICE program of DOST, through the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI), has embarked on science and technology (S&T) events since 2013 throughout the country’s various regions.
This year’s theme adopts “Science for the People: Fostering Inventions for an Innovative Nation” in pursuit of President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s 0 to 10-Point socio-Economic Agenda to “promote science, technology and the creative arts to enhance innovation and creative capacity towards self-sustaining inclusive development.”
Up for public display during the three-day event are some 34 inventions and innovative crafts prequalified from 65 original entries.
Republic Act No. 7459 or the “Inventors Incentives Act of the Philippines” has adopted the national policy where government provides “a program to set up a climate conducive to invention and innovation, give encouragement and support to inventors who are creative and resourceful, as well as the imbued with a deep sense of nationalism, and maximize the capability and productivity of inventors through incentives and other forms of assistance and support.”
Madrigal said the competition has six categories: Outstanding Invention or Tuklas Award; Outstanding Utility Model; Outstanding Industrial Design; Outstanding Creative Research or Likha Award; and two categories for the Outstanding Creative Student Research or Sibol Award for High School and another for College students.
He said that three finalists for each category shall receive cash incentives and certificates of recognition and represent as the regional contenders for the National Invention competition in 2018.
Juan Carlo M. Manas, DOST Calabarzon public information officer, said entries covered research topics under Invention, Utility Model, Industrial Design, and Creative Research which will be showcased in the exhibits.
Besides the invention and innovation showcase, forums on 3D Printing Technology and Invention Development and Intellectual Property are slated for the public free of charge on a first-come, first-serve registration for 150 attendees due to space limitations. (PNA)
