Yemeni tribesmen released three
Filipino sailors who were kidnapped two weeks ago in the central province of Marib, the Yemeni Defense Ministry said in a brief
statement on Wednesday.
"The three Filipino sailors have been released, after efforts made by the Yemeni government," the ministry said in a statement, without providing further details.
On March 21, Yemen's interior ministry said a group of armed men belonging to Bani Jabr tribe in Marib abducted three Filipino
sailors when they were heading to Nashton port in neighboring al-Mahra province, off the Arabian Sea. It said the kidnappers demanded the release of their jailed relatives in exchange for the sailors.
The sailors work for Navigational Nour Company, according to officials of the ministry.
Foreigners are frequently kidnapped in Yemen's remote areas where many armed tribal groups often resort to such acts to force the Yemeni government to meet their demands. Most of the abducted foreigners are freed unharmed.
