LINGAYEN – Pangasinan’s poultry farmers have been advised not to panic over the reported death of three ducks in a farm in Manaoag town on Friday.
Speaking over Bombo Radyo on Saturday, Dagupan provincial veterinarian Dr. Eric Perez said his office immediately investigated the death of the ducks and found that they did not show any symptom of avian flu.
However, to be sure, blood samples from the farm’s live ducks were taken and sent to Manila for laboratory analysis, he said, adding that the results are expected in a week.
Perez noted that there was nothing unusual -- no mass death of ducks -- in the Manaoag duck farm.
The owner must have reported the incident because he suspected that avian flu was behind it, he said, adding that it is possible that the death of the three ducks only coincided with the bird flu outbreak in San Luis, Pampanga and in San Isidro and Jaen, Nueva Ecija.
“This means that our poultry raisers are now on alert and are immediately reporting the deaths of their fowls," he said.
Perez maintained that Pangasinan is still bird flu-free as quarantine checkpoints had been set up in the province’s eight entry and exit points immediately after Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol raised the alarm over the emergence of avian flu in Pampanga.
The incident is also being investigated by the newly-formed Regional Avian Flu Task Force from La Union.
Perez called on the Pangasinenses to remain calm as authorities are doing everything possible to ensure that the avian flu virus, an H5 strain, does not enter the province. (PNA)
