NegOr transport group sends 200 members to Cebu protests
« on: May 18, 2020, 01:10:00 PM »
DUMAGUETE CITY – The ND Motor Piston has sent a 200-man delegation, composed of transport leaders and officers from all over Negros Oriental, to Cebu for a four-day activity that will culminate on Saturday in line with the nationwide transport strike.

This, as Malacanang declared the suspension of classes in public schools and work in government offices under the executive branch due to the nationwide transport strike on Tuesday.

NP Motor Piston provincial chairman Cirilo Collado and Dumaguete ND Motor Piston chairman Eddie Lazaro said they had actually scheduled a transport caravan starting Sept. 20 to let President Rodrigo Duterte know that the transport sector is vehemently against Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade’s proposal on the jeepney modernization program.

However, they had called off the scheduled caravan at the request of Governor Roel Degamo because of the Buglasan Festival activities, which are ongoing until Oct. 22, and out of respect for Negrenses who are celebrating their provincial fiesta.

Collado said upon their arrival in Cebu on Tuesday, they would proceed to Plaza Independencia for the so-called “Salubong sa Independencia”, where different transport groups from the whole of Central Visayas would converge to express their sentiments against policies, which they believe are contrary to what the President was espousing during his campaign.

The ND Motor Piston leaders in Dumaguete and the province said they are going to Cebu to sympathize with their counterparts from Regions 6, 7 and 8 and to express their sentiments against certain proposals, at their own expense.

Meanwhile, 16 different tricycle associations in Dumaguete united for a cause -- a basketball tournament organized by the sectoral desk of Dumaguete headed by Pastor Laping.

Lazaro said they had scheduled games on Monday so many of the pedicab drivers could join the games at the Tinago gymnasium.

According to Lazaro, the declaration of a public holiday on Monday was timely, and paved the way for several games to be held.

The national transport strike on Monday had no effect on Dumaguete and Negros Oriental as most, if not all, of the 500 to 600 different units of multicabs, public utility jeepneys and buses plying the routes Dumaguete to Siaton all the way to Basay in the south and Dumaguete to Bais up to Canlaon City in the north, were on the road as usual.

According to Collado and Lazaro, Mayor Felipe Remollo of Dumaguete and Degamo understand their predicament regarding the planned phase-out of old jeepneys and the proposal of Senator Francis Pangilinan in Senate Bill 1540 to replace the tricycles with e-trikes.

According to Lazaro, they have intimated to Remollo their objection to the replacement of the more than 2,500 tricycles in Dumaguete with e-trikes, adding that if the city would allow the deployment of e-trikes, they could co-exist. (PNA)
