A Tagbilaranon who is based in Cebu and officer in charge of the Philippine sports Commission (PSC) says the PSC plans to put up secondary school for promising athletes.
After the Philippine Sports Institute program was shoved deep into the shelves of the Commission of Higher Education (Ched), the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is once more attempting to incorporate the academe and sports with a new plan to create a Sports High School.
PSC officer in charge Fr. Vic Uy said chairman Harry Angping, who is currently on a trip to China with the other commissioners, came up with idea after observing how helpful a sports school is to the grassroots development program for countries like China and Indonesia.
The PSC, during Angping’s predecessor William “Butch†Ramirez, came up with an ambitious program-the Philippine Sports Institute (PSI). It was aimed at professionalizing everything in the sports industry.
It kicked off to a promising start but had to be shelved when Ramirez was replaced by Angping. To make matters worse, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo also had the PSI turned over to Ched, which has not acted on it until now.
Now, Fr. Uy said they are embarking again on the project that will beef up the grassroots program of the PSC. They will be working closely with the Department of Education for this endeavor.
“There is a school for the arts, so it will also be a good thing to have a school catering to our young athletes. This has been proven effective in countries like China and even Indonesia, whose young athletes have shown great improvements in the past years,†said Fr. Uy.
Fr. Uy, who is also a commissioner and the executive director of the PSC, said that as early as now, there are already provinces offering to be the pilot venues for the project.
“Naga, Northern Leyte, Ilocos and Dagupan offered their facilities. We can’t have a sports school without a sports facility,†said Fr. Uy.
He added that the program in the school will be designed to allow students to study while setting aside time for training.
“Athletes will no longer have a problem inserting their training during their vacant hours as this will be taken care of by the school. Not only will this allow the teachers an trainers to monitor the athletes’ performance both academically and in their chosen sport, but will also help us in talent identification for future competitions,†he added.
