BACOLOD CITY – Two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), who were part of the group who arrived in Negros Occidental on April 14, have tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson announced the latest confirmed cases on Thursday night while the two patients are being quarantined at the Provincial Healing Center, a patient care center opened by the Capitol in EB Magalona town.
"Both are OFWs (whom) we allowed to come home. They came from Cebu and passed by our port in Escalante City. They are both asymptomatic, which means they don't have symptoms," Lacson said in a statement.
This brings the total number of confirmed Covid-19 in Negros Occidental to four.
Based on the information provided by the provincial government, Patient No. 3 is a 38-year-old man, who traveled from The Netherlands and arrived in the Philippines on March 24. He is a resident of Silay City.
Meanwhile, Patient No. 4, a 50-year-old man, arrived in the country from Finland on March 17. He is from Candoni town.
Both patients have not been able to see their families yet since they were immediately placed under mandatory quarantine after they arrived in the province.
They were among the group of 35 OFWs, who included 20 residents of various towns and cities in the province, as well as 15 from Bacolod City, who traveled from the port of Tabuelan town in Cebu and arrived in Barcelona port in Escalante City.
After their arrival, they boarded two buses that directly brought them to the patient care center in northern Negros.
Earlier, Zeaphard Caelian, head of the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division, said they were allowed to enter Negros Occidental after submitting a certificate of completion of the required 14-day quarantine in their host-province or place of origin.
Once they arrive, they are subjected to another 14-day quarantine regardless of the quarantine they have undergone in the host-province or place of origin, he added.
The process is based on the protocols set for the repatriation of OFWs, Caelian said.
Negros Occidental's Patient No. 1, a 41-year-old woman from EB Magalona, has already recovered while Patient No. 2, a resident of La Castellana, is under quarantine in the patient care center of the central Negros town. (PNA)
