Truck ban in GenSan during peak hours
« on: May 09, 2020, 05:45:53 PM »
GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- In a bid to ease the city’s traffic problems, the city government will ban trucks starting next week along portions of the national highway and a major road here during peak hours.

Lawyer Doan Balboa, executive assistant of the city mayor’s office, said Friday the move was based on the provisions of the city’s “truck ban ordinance” that was passed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod or city council last year.

She said the ordinance will formally take effect on Sunday, Oct. 1 but the implementation will start the following day, Oct 2, since the truck ban was only set from Monday to Saturday.

Under the measure, she said the truck ban will be implemented from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

It will cover the stretch of the national highway from Hadano Park in Barangay Apopong to the Lagao-Buayan junction in Barangay Lagao, and the P. Acharon Boulevard from Honorio Arriola Street in Barangay Bula to the Silway Bridge in Barabgay Dadiangas West, she said.

Balboa said trucks that violate the ban will be slapped with fines amounting to P5,000.

If the driver would not be able to pay the fine, she said the truck will be impounded by the local government.

Truck owners are subsidiarily liable for any violation and would be required to settle the fine if the driver would not be able to pay for it, she said.

Balboa noted that the city government had conducted information dissemination campaigns regarding the ban.

“Expect that by Monday, our traffic enforcers will start apprehending violators,” she said in a briefing.

City Councilor Franklin Gacal Jr., author of the ordinance, said the measure will mainly relieve the city proper of slow-moving trucks during peak hours.

He said trucks going to Davao City should instead use the northern section of the city circumferential road and those going to the city fish port complex and other industries in Barangay Tambler should pass through the western section.(PNA)
