"Filipino" vs. "Boholano/Cebuano/etc..."
« on: November 26, 2008, 01:52:53 AM »
So I was clicking through my YouTube videos when I realized there was someone on one of my videos that was stirring a debate whether "Filipinos" is the correct term for associating all people who were born & raised in the Philippines. What sparked my curiosity the most was the fact that this guy was claiming he was a "Cebuano" as opposed to a "Filipino" due to personal conflicts he had with his government.

So, out of curiousity ... what would you consider yourself to be? A Filipino, a Cebuano/or person from whatever specific town/barrio, or both?

Its very different for us Filipinos who grew up in the 'states. When we go about our ordinary daily lives, if people incline about one's ethnicity, I usually just say 'Filipino'. Then if the individual asking asks, "So you speak, Tagalog?", then I would infer, "Bisaya" then lecture him about the different languages.

It is only when people incline for further information, does one really need to divulge specifics.

That or if I'm hanging around amongst other Filipinos, then do I say that I'm Bisaya or speak Bisaya.

Depends on the situation, depends on the person I'm talking to.
