fellow tb members, i've been at it in the last 3 days. nothing. those who are experts at music research in the internet, please help me with cliff richard's "THIS DAY"* and the original tausug lyrics of "BALELENG". (i already have the visayan and tagalog versions--max surban, freddie aguilar--and the guitar chords, but i wish for the original tausug version.)

VHINZ, you're good at this. i hope you're still around. mp3 is very much welcome. a youtube one will take hours of downloading, considering the internet speed here, where i am. besides, i hope to be able to listen to these two songs while driving. i also hope to play this on the violin (hehe, ambisyosang kabaw).

i truly love old songs. my sincere thanks.

*lyrics start with "this day could have been/ just an ordinary day...etc."

This has the tune of baleleng, but i think this is the islamicized version of the song.

I hope this comes useful for you. i have no idea what is being said.

This is Grace Nono's version of the Sama, Tausug, Yakan, Badjao, Bangingi (Philippine southern ethno-linguistic groups) traditional song "Baleleng." "Leleng" is a term of endearment which means "beloved," or "darling." Throughout history, the Baleleng melody has been recycled to present new situations and stories.

Many versions have been made of this song. (Jakiri 1998) This one uses Grace Nono's original melodic passages and Tagalog lyrics about the Filipino overseas worker. Arrangement and record production is by Bob Aves. Guest vocals is by Taalao Manandao, a Sama traditional artist. Dance is by Nerissa Guevarra.

Thanks. Grace Nono's voice is so deep. It's grounded with the graces and richness of the Earth, primal as the streams of water flowing by the rice paddies. Her voice is soul-piercing.

I asked P. Emraida Kiram to provide me with the lyrics of the Tausug love song, Baleleng. Here below is the first stanza which she tried to translate into Cebuano Visayan but she admits it is incomplete, so perhaps someone out there can help.....

The music of this song is really beautiful. Have you heard it? sung it? Does anyone in DILA know the whole lyrics? Can anyone translate the whole piece into Cebuano Visayan?

BB: I only know the first stanza. I am trying to get the rest of the song from a friend here in Milw who used to sing it during our Karaoke sessions.I am sending this to you, so that I can get rid of the tune in my head. It seems to be singing itself. Note: that the song is To: Leleng I think by the time the christians got hold of the song, they made it one word: "Baleleng" - it should be ba Leleng. As Leleng is the name of the maiden.

i believe max surban can only claim as original his own cebuano version of the song. i even doubt if he himself was the one who translated this, though i don't know any better.

as far as i can remember, when i got curious about this song in the early '80s (max surban's version was recorded in 1978) because my then 3-year-old bol-anon jamong niece frequently sang this, my father said that it's a tausug folk song and that max surban's version somehow caused "their world" and "our world" to get closer.

i thought then that the words "sitangkay" and "sibuto" were just a 3-year-old's gobbledygook, until i saw a poster at the post office and realized that these were places in tawi-tawi that are reachable by mail! i just had to do some research because i felt i was taking for granted some places in my own country while i can go to great lengths to find out where in denmark the castle of elsinore of shakespeare's hamlet is.

then i let the song rest in my mind's back burner. the next time i paid attention to this song was when i named one of our chickens "baleleng".

the song's music had always been haunting, but now the song itself had come back to haunt me. i was stumped when our household help, a tagalog, said that "baleleng" is originally tagalog as sung by freddie aguilar. so i showed her, if only because it gets my goat when tagalog versions of cebuano songs are claimed by tagalogs as their own compositions (the most infamous: "kasadya ning taknaa" christmas song).

the best wake-up call of all: a non-filipino here played "baleleng" on the electronic organ. i felt like crying.

the phrase 'aparri to jolo' had always been wrong. whoever coined that (circa 1950s or 1960s?) didn't think of the northernmost and southernmost small islands that are part of the country. it should have been batanes to tawi-tawi. better still, babuyan to sitangkai.

the freddie aguilar tagalog version has a better orchestration than max surban's. at least, i convinced our household help that the 'second original' is visayan and not tagalog as freddie's version came about a decade later as a theme song of a movie that starred lito lapid and monica herrera. (i don't know the movie's title.)
