I need the translation of this title, Father.

My attempt: Always living?

Is this correct?

I need the translation of this title, Father.

My attempt: Always living?

Is this correct?

If I were to translate it freely this is how I would say it:

Always alive and unforgetable is
the love that I feel for you,
the love that I have in my heart right now.

I apologize for the second verse... those are deep Bol-anon words
(yam-id and tamay)

Even if you give me that look (?)
Or I get criticized for loving you (?)
Love will always grow (molambo)... and, molipang (I don't know this one)
Because true love never dies...

Chrosu:
Please believe in what I say
Trust in the promise I give
This love is one that never withers
Even if it's carried away by the waves of tears (hehehehe)
If my heart is pierced/hurt by fate
Then I'll just wait for you in heaven.  (Naks) ;D

what an enjoyable thread of enjoyable translations!  salamat, fr chic ug scarbzy migs.  buhi sa kanunay ang akong adlaw karon kay mao niy una nakong nabasahan bisag gapirok-pirok pa ko kay bag-ong mata.

kini nga kanta usa ni sa akong most favorite cebuano/boholano-visayan songs, which for me is in the league of rigodon's 'sama sa usa ka damgo' (cebu pop music festival champion).  it's so haunting, i told myself that i must get at the source the first time i heard it.

just an academic curiosity:

is j. ning romea from loon or from maribojoc?  i always presumed he was from loon, but i came across an article about maribojoc that claimed him as one of the town's sons.

'buhi sa kanunay' is identified with him as the composer.  my understanding is that he is the lyricist while lawyer elpidio biliran is the composer-arranger.  i'm not too sure now, but it seems as if their partnership (ala weber-rice or rogers-hammerstein) also produced the 'bohol hymn'.

anybody out there who can help enlighten me on this?

I always know Ning Romeo as taga Loon. Wikipedia says he was born in Napo, Loon, Bohol. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justino_Romea) but he could have migrated to Maribojoc or married a Maribojocanon. Hehehe.

Also, he is known more as a lyricist than a musician. He wrote the words to the Bohol Hymn which Mrs. Iquit Butalid claimed to be hers per record (old LP) that the former Bohol (Sanghimig) Choir produced in the 70s. But based on hearsays - among priests musicians - it was really then Fr. (now Bishop) Zacharias "Ites" Jimenez of Inabanga, Bohol - our former music director at IHMS - who was responsible for the translation of the Bohol Hymn to what it is now, with the help of HS School pianist, Mrs. (I forgot the name) Andrade. But then again, that's only a story from the grapevine, hahahaha (but which I know has some truth).  ;D

Atty Elpidio Biliran, the Sr., who co-wrote the song "Dagohoy" sung by Yoyoy Villame could be the tunesmith of the said song "Buhi Sa Kanunay" pero karon pako nakadungog ani (via Isles). But that's a big possibility knowing that Atty. Biliran is very well known as a music writer. His son, Fr. Joseph was a classmate of mine and he used to tell me stories about his dad's musical journey... while Fr. Elpidio "Boy" Biliran, Jr. was the very person responsible for teaching me how to write musical notation when we were studying together at the SVD Seminary in Tagaytay in 1981. Fr. Biliran is a good organist and one of the best lyricists I know.

As far as "Sama Sa Usa Ka Damgo" is concerned, I wonder if we are talking about one and the same song... the one which won the grand prize in the 2nd Cebu Pop Music Festival in 1982 0r 1983? The title I'm thinking about is "Damgo Man Lang," written by the former Fr. TQ Solis and Atty. Antonio Amora, Jr. and sung by Arthur Ungab? Pero morag layo raman nis title sa imong gi mention hehehehe.  :D

thanks, fr chic.  it's loon, finally.

too bad about someone claiming the lyrics (the original english lyrics?) as hers because i believe it is common knowledge that they're romea's.  i hope it was just an oversight of the record album's designer.

from the background of the bilirans that you've shared, i'm more convinced now that it was elpidio biliran the senior who composed and arranged 'buhi sa kanunay' (or 'paabuton ko ikaw' or 'ako kang paabuton'?  i seem to have heard others give different titles to this song).  j. ning romea was my idol of a writer, by the way.

'sama sa usa ka damgo' i think is different from 'damgo man lang'.  yes, the former won top prize in the 2nd cebu pop music festival (the second placer then was 'kausa, nabasa ang tubig' by alan jayme rabaya).  i'm not familiar with 'damgo man lang'.

'sama sa usa ka damgo' was composed by florencio rigodon and sung by dante pagapulaan, a practicing architect.  molupad gyod akong ispiritu aning kantaha, parehag effect sa 'buhi sa kanunay'.  i couldn't find 'sama sa usa ka damgo' in cyberspace though.  (but then i'm not much on downloading either.  i don't even know how to use youtube.  it's the husband who downloads for me, hehe.)

ang lyrics sa kanta (dalang panghinaot nga wa pa ni nako kalimti):

BUHI SA KANUNAY
(aka Paabuton Ko Ikaw)
Biliran-Romea

Buhi sa kanunay
Ug di ko hikalimtan
Ang gugmang gibati ko
Giampingan ning dughan
Bisag giyam-iran
Bisan pag gitamay
Molambo ug molipang
Kay ang gugmang matuod
Di mamatay.

chorus:

Tuhoi intawon ako
Salig sa gisaad ko
Gugma kining way pagkalaya
Bisag gibanlas sa luha
Kun ang kasingkasing ko
Sa palad sakiton
Didto sa kalangitan
Ako kang paabuton.

modification, about an hour after this post:  this same lyrics were already posted by chicogon in the thread 'duna ka bay gipaabot mabyuda'. ;D

Diha pay usa ka teacher, a good writer, si Mrs. Fuderanan.

Justino ‘Ning’ R. Romea wrote the original English lyrics of and composed the Bohol Hymn which was translated into "Awit sa Bohol" by Maxilende Ganade, music teacher of Holy Spirit School. He also composed the school hymns of RPC (UB) and BSAT.  He is best remembered for the love song "Ako Kang Paabuton" (which starts with the line "Buhi sa Kanunay"). He is the original and only composer/lyricist of this popular Visayan folksong which had been arranged by many composers, among them Biliran. This may be the reason why people say he co-wrote the song.  Romea also composed the folk song "Sa Daplin sa Baybayon" as well as most of the songs featured in the annual ‘drama’ presentations in his native Napo for which he served as writer, director and musical arranger.

Additional information regarding his father, Bernardo "Leon" Vidal Romea: Rondalla Trainer; Scriptwriter, Director and Musical Arranger for the "Drama" in Napo. Bernardo or "Pantaleon" or "Leon", as he was more popularly known, was born on March 12, 1895 in Barangay Napo to spouses Marcelo (Oyong Eloy) and Maria (Oyang Iyay) Vidal, a second wife.  His grandparents were Domingo Romea and Cecilia Ordubanes of Barangay Taytay. After completing his elementary education and first year of high school, the latter at Bohol High School, he qualified for a teaching post, a feat in those days.  On June 16, 1910, at age 15, he was appointed temporary teacher in Loon.  A few years later, he passed the teachers' examinations and went on to become principal for 19 years. Romea's command of the English language was grammatically flawless.  He bought American books and subscribed to local English magazines (e.g. Free Press, Graphics, etc.) hoping that his children would love or develop the habit of reading. They indeed became bookworms and their communication skills improved. His passion for music was such that he composed songs, organized rondallas wherever he was assigned in his teaching career, and promoted and participated in competitions.  This went on even through his retirement years.  He could skillfully play any of the string instruments in the rondalla but was at his best with the banduria.  Romea was keen in distinguishing the slightest discord that at times during rondalla rehearsals, he would suddenly wave a hand for a pause just to tune up a dissonant instrument. Romea was also called a "dramaturgo" for he wrote and directed stage plays or "drama" which always served as the culminating feature of the barrio fiesta celebration in Napo.  In fact, he is acknowledged as the original playwright, director and composer–musical arranger of Napo’s stage plays that are now mounted on May 25 of each year without fail.  It is believed that Napo holds the record of staging the longest running series of annual plays in Bohol, if not the whole country.

"Sama sa Usa ka Damgo" is the grand prize winner in the first ever Cebu Popular Music Festival (1981); second was "Musikang Binisaya"; and third, "Kausa Nabasa ang Tubig". Fr. Tikyo Solis' "Damgo Man Lang" is also a grand prize winner, I just can't recall the year. I was there when it was performed by Arthur Ungab. Search youtube for the choir version of this song.

i see.  first diay, dili second cebu pop music festival...  yeah, i'm familiar with these three songs.  (we used to have a record, those vinyl long plays of old, of that particular music festival's entries.)  i was taken in at once by 'sama...'.

it took me time to appreciate 'kausa nabasa...' (a knee-jerk reaction to rabaya's usual oxymorons and shrill artsy style).  but when i heard it over and over, and finally when i heard it sung by a college choir, i knew then that the song was worth its high place in the altar of local culture.

the third prize winner song gives me tantrums.

Pina FB style na lang ni kay nagbuwag-buwag ang mga gusto nako replyan ahihihi...

@Koddi Salamat sa info about Ning Romea. He was our favorite songwriter of Binisaya when we were still with The Jeduthun Choir in the late 70s singing Bisayan classics like Buhi Sa Kanunay, Sa Daplin Sa Baybayon, etc. Also thanks for Mrs. Ganade's name (not Andrade as written earlier). Mrs. Ganade was also our pianist during concerts in our Jeduthun days and worked closely with Bishop Ites Jimenez, one of the best unknown composers of Bisayan songs from Bohol of all times. According to TQ Solis, these two were responsible in completing the translation of Bohol Hymn in the dialect. Maayo gani kay "humble" kaayo ning mga talenta, maski gipapas ilang mga ngan sa credits sa writer sa Bohol Hymn Bol-anon version.  ;D

@Islander Thanks for clarifying about the two songs. I'm sure nakadungog nako ana na kanta if that was the song that won the 1st ever Cebu Pop Music Festival because I have the first four and I used to listen to them (intently).

About the choir version of Buhi Sa Kanunay, ang choir ra jod sa seminario akong nadunggan "ever" nga sig kanta ani - not in concerts - but during funerals. I can still replay the whole vocal arrangements in my head right now hehehehe  ;D

Finally, "Kausa Nausa Nabasa Ang Tubig" was the priests' favorite when we were young priests in the mid 80s. Si Anhing padre Nonoy Avenido used to play that song to us with additional "funny verses" to make us all laugh, much like Bay Hubs and Bay Bugs do here at TB. Makadungog gani nang duha sa lyrics ani na kanta sigurado jong ma OT napod ta ani nga thread bwahahaha.  ;D

Funny verse:

Kalibutang buak, mga laya nga bulak
Kinandadohang lawak
Sa tunga-tunga, sa kangitngit
May nabating usa ka singgit, "Waaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!"  ;D

seminary choir ba kaha diay tong nikanta sa simbahan ani sa requiem mass ni mr. masamayor (whose first name i now forgot) kaniadto sa kasuok-suokang panahon?  didto ra ko nakadungog ug choir nga nikanta ani.  and it was the first time i heard the song.  wa lang ko makakita sa choir kay wa ko kasulod sa simbahan kay nagpunsisok ang mga tawo.

na-mention ra gyod si msgr. rudy villanueva, the enfant terrible of creative writing (short story) of the '60s and later cebu's foremost musician.  "cebu music is not music without villanueva" or something like that was what i used to hear.

i first heard sa daplin sa baybayon from the san carlos college seminary choir sa cebu, helmed by him.  mao nga na-shock ko reading an earlier post nga kang j. ning romea diay ni nga kanta.  whew!

Yes yes yes Rudy Villanueva is Cebu music and Cebu music is Rudy Villanueva (for the longest time). All the great musicians (personally ra god pod) that I came to know and who shared their knowledge to us as youngsters were either students or greatly-influenced by this man (Fr. Boboy Curso, Bishop Ites Jimenez, TQ Solis, Fr. Arnold Zamora, etc). I'd say he was fond of Boholano priests musicians... mao sad tong ni complain ang mga taga Cebu kay pabor-pabor daw siya sa mga taga Bohol. He was strongly criticized for arranging "Damgo Man Lang" of TQ Solis when he was still, at that time, the chairman of Cecu PM Festival, hehehehe. He was also the chairman of the Cebu Pop Music Festival since its inception/establishment (basin pod diay iya ning ideya wa ta kahibaw hehehe).

RV, as he is fondly called, or his style of vocal arrangement was what gave me the inspiration to write and arrange new Tagalog religious songs when I went to Tagaytay in 1981-1985. I wasn't impressed with the way they sing religious songs, so mao tong naghimo ug nag arrange na lang pod kog akoa RV-style, which eventually led the printing of SASMASSONGS (Mass of St. Augustine), also called in Tagalog MISASMA. SASMA stands for St. Augustine Major Seminary, next to the SVD Seminary.  :)

Buhay nga naman... it doesn't tell you where it leads you...

hahaha!  buot silag duol sa luwag ang bol-anon musicians maong iyang na-arrange ang kang tq solis.  bitaw, the way i see it, buotan man god ang mga proteges ni rv aka msgr rudy nga mga bol-anon.  ang mga cebuano niyang proteges kay nagpabadlong man (di tanan kay naay usang amigo nako, buotan.  nigawas lang siya pagkapari kay naminyo man.  but that does not make him badlungon.)

dihay usa nga nanglagot kaayo ko.  he stole my lyrics, honest.  he only changed one word and then concluded that i wasn't the lyricist.  iya na tanan, as composer-lyricist of the songs of a show (nothing to do with msgr rudy; mokurog tingali ko kun naa pa).  paskang tong seminaristaha, dakoag ulo, nisukol ug syinagitay ni msgr rudy.  maayo gani kay wa ma-pari ug dayon.  tua na sa australia, nag-taxi driver.)

bitaw, last nakong attend ug memorable concert ni msgr rudy was eons ago.  the concert's repertoire were the songs of barry manilow.  i learned later that msgr rudy and manilow were classmates when they took their graduate studies in music.

a couple more msgr rudy concerts followed, which rather struck me as forgettable.  it's been more than ten years.  sadly, the latest i heard is that his concerts are no longer as good.  i surmise it's not so much that he's lost the passion or that he's not so healthy anymore but it's more because his talents (i.e. the seminarians) may no longer be as good in music as those who came before.

it's great to know that you have a trail of music too.  (as i suspected, based on some posts here. :D)

There is one Boholano Msgr. Rudy Villanueva admired the most in terms of music or piano, Fr. Rolando "El Maestro" Caverte of Bilar, Bohol. According to Msgr. Rudy, "Sus no kung gitugutan pa nis Fr. Caverte sa obispo nga mo eskwela ug music..." Kuyaw naman gani nga wa maka eskwela... was his point. Fr. Caverte, now retired, was the pianist of the Singing Priests of San Francisco as well as the Paring Bol-anon USA in many of the concerts we've done over the years (26 years to be exact) in the U.S. The good ol' times!  ;)

For many years the type of songs that Msgr Rudy composed and arranged dominated the Cebu Pop for many years, until now. It seems that participating composers anticipate which type of songs can make the final cut of 12 finalists. Every year since the 1990s I always go to the Cebu popfest; nothing has changed. Mao-mao lang gihapon ang mga judges. Hangtud ang mga finalists nagbalik-balik na lang through the years. Bag-o pa lang mi retire as chairman of the board si Perry Aleonar, tigulang na kaayo. Usahay naay mga new blood sa mga judges, pero panagsa ra. Host Sam Costanilla's jokes are repetitive and boring na. Pero despite these, motan-aw gihapon ko, kay uroy ug naay surprise guests. Like this year (30th anniversary sa popfest), walay contest, pero dihay mini concert of "the best of cebupop" plus a full concert of vina morales. Basta Vina concert gani, grabe ang energy. Enjoy tanan.

hahaha!  buot silag duol sa luwag ang bol-anon musicians maong iyang na-arrange ang kang tq solis.  bitaw, the way i see it, buotan man god ang mga proteges ni rv aka msgr rudy nga mga bol-anon.  ang mga cebuano niyang proteges kay nagpabadlong man (di tanan kay naay usang amigo nako, buotan.  nigawas lang siya pagkapari kay naminyo man.  but that does not make him badlungon.)

dihay usa nga nanglagot kaayo ko.  he stole my lyrics, honest.  he only changed one word and then concluded that i wasn't the lyricist.  iya na tanan, as composer-lyricist of the songs of a show (nothing to do with msgr rudy; mokurog tingali ko kun naa pa).  paskang tong seminaristaha, dakoag ulo, nisukol ug syinagitay ni msgr rudy.  maayo gani kay wa ma-pari ug dayon.  tua na sa australia, nag-taxi driver.)

bitaw, last nakong attend ug memorable concert ni msgr rudy was eons ago.  the concert's repertoire were the songs of barry manilow.  i learned later that msgr rudy and manilow were classmates when they took their graduate studies in music.

a couple more msgr rudy concerts followed, which rather struck me as forgettable.  it's been more than ten years.  sadly, the latest i heard is that his concerts are no longer as good.  i surmise it's not so much that he's lost the passion or that he's not so healthy anymore but it's more because his talents (i.e. the seminarians) may no longer be as good in music as those who came before.

it's great to know that you have a trail of music too.  (as i suspected, based on some posts here. :D)

Sus, nabiktima diay pod ka aning angkon2x ug intellectual property right. Like you said, daghang kanahan sa ato basta bahin na ingon ana because of loose/lax intellectual property copyright rule or culture among Filipinos.

Yes, Msgr. RV was a graduate of Julliard School of Music  in NYC, where many of the great and known musicians at one point in time walked in its hallways.

The last I've heard of him was when his face was "napatik" in Cebu's newspapers for alleged use of controlled substance or shabu... nidako jud ang news because of his stature in the community. Wala nako kadungog unsay balita human ato...  ???

Amen. Dili lang ang Cebu Pop Festival but almost all of OPM in recent and in the not so recent years. Halos usa ray style ug "gubot pas lukot," ika nga ang mga arrangements (they put everything together at the same time). I may sound bias coz of my affinity to (and love for) Nashville music. But lately medyo giganahan napod kog balik sa OPM because, I guess, of the globalization of almost everything. Nisikat napod sa ato ang acoustic which are simpler (beauty in simplicity ;) ) and easy-to-the-ear artform, hehehe.  :)

it's nice to know that cebu pop music festival adhered to its tradition.  ang nobel prize bitaw, wizened old men man ang judges.  i know perry aleonar is an accomplished violinist.

some negative feedbacks before point to the winning pieces as traditional, not pop, because the judges are already old.  ugh.  i guess all it needed was a clear understanding of the word 'pop'.   kun mga bata ibutang as judges, aray, rap man kaha ang modaog.  maoy gidangat.

mao siguro tong panahona nga nag-"witch hunting" pod ang ubang news reporters ug mga paring sad-an kay nauso man sa amerika ang pusot-pusot nga news about abuses by the clergy.  nanggawas pod sa pinas ang istorya, apil cebu.  ahat bag napatik tong akong migong pari nga naminyo, dako na kuno ang anak maoy flower girl.  kadugay na nilang gikasal ug civil, himoan pa gyod ug istorya?  i suspect the same treatment was given to msgr rudy.  di man mapahiran ug baye, drugs na lay gibira.  that's why i didn't believe that story.

well, the msgr drinks.  i don't know how true, but i heard there's already something wrong with his liver.  but shabu?  bisag ako mismo ang makakita, di gihapon ko motuo.  there are just some things that one just can't discredit a person with.  it looks like that controversy died a natural death.  as well it should.

Si. Fr. Caverte was the music teacher of Fr. Boboy Curso ug Bishop Ites Jimenez sa sila pay mga seminarista hehehe. Fr. Curso was our music teacher sa 1st year HS in 1972 after his ordination (one year lang), then Fr. Ites "Obispo" Jimenez followed in 1973 til I graduated in 1980. He stayed til 1981 and joined Pagadian Diocese handtud nahimo siyang obispo didto. Boy Biliran, TQ Solis, Arnold Zamora and hundred of us, including myself, sakop na aning duha (Curso and Jimenez) both of whom were protegees (students?) of Msgr. Rudy Villanueva. Among nadawat influence ra intawon ni Msgr. Rudy (adto man mi dagan sa Cebu mangayog kopya sa iyang mga bag-ong arrangements during those days), except those who proceeded to Cebu for their further studies, nga nahimo jud niyang sakop sa music.

Sa akong parte I was lucky to have Fr. Caverte as our kura in Catigbian in the late 70s for many many years. He was the best basketball player I've ever met, kay wa man siya mag kanta2x or tukar2x when he was in Catigbian. Di ba kaha tungod kay way piano sa Catigbian in those days? Hehehe.  ;D

Well taken ang comment ni Isles. There is also a problem in regard to marketing the so-called recent "pop" songs produced by the musicfest. It seems easier to market the non-popfest music of the local bands. The phenomenal success of "Charing" and "Gikumot-kumot" suggests that Cebuano pop has indeed changed through the years.

A certain Bishop Ites Jimenez is mentioned several times in this thread. Is he the same Msgr. Jimenez who serves with Msgr. Juan de Dios Mataflorida Pueblos in the Diocese of Butuan? I met him there a couple of years ago and I was informed that he kept looking for me after I treated him with some Bol-anon jokes and had him laughing through dinner.

Yes, same person. They used to serve together, too, at IHMS (Taloto) in the late 70's when Msgr. Dedi was our rector and Ites the music director. There were really good formators!!!  ;D
