The U.S. stocks ended off session highs but still held solid gains on Wednesday after strong demand on Portugal's bond auction lifted market sentiment.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 46.32 points, or 0.45 percent, to 10,387.01. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 7.03 points, or 0.64 percent, to 1,098.87 and the Nasdaq was up 19.98 points, or 0.90 percent, to 2,228.87.
Concerns over European debt problems weighed on equities on Tuesday, dragging major indexes down more than 1 percent after a Wall Street Journal report said the recent European bank stress tests understated some lenders' holdings of government debt.
However, Portugal successfully auctioned off 1.3 billion dollars worth of government debt early Wednesday, which helped ease some worries in the market. - PNA
