PNA - The Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) has become the first power utility in the country to offer electric bills in Braille for visually-impaired consumers.
Veco officials said they are hoping other service providers like Davao Light and Power Co. Inc. and Cotabato Light and Power Company Inc. and even the Metropolitan Cebu Water District, Metro Cebu’s water utility, will replicate such service.
The first set to Veco bills in Braille will be delivered starting this week to seven Veco customers who were initially identified by Veco’s project partner, Resources for the Blind Inc. (RBI).
The first recipient is Eric Abella who owns a sari-sari store in Guadalupe, Cebu City.
RBI, a non-profit organization devoted to removing the obstacles that prevent visually-impaired Filipinos from reaching their full potential, will print the bills in Braille and update the list of recipients from time to time.
Veco will shoulder all expenses that may be incurred in the printing and delivery of the bills.
Sebastian Lacson, Veco vice president for administration and customer services group, said that the especially printed Veco bill in Braille is an attachment to the regular bill and will contain only pertinent details, such as status of the bill, name and address of recipient, amount of payment, due date and notes, among others.
He encourages other visually-impaired Veco customers to inform the utility company if they want to receive a copy of the billing statement in Braille.
Jaime Jose Aboitiz, Veco senior vice president and chief operating officer, said they will ensure that this service will be replicated in other Aboitiz-owned power distribution companies before the year ends.
