Japan's key consumer price index fell 1.0 percent in August from a year earlier for the 18th straight month of decline, the government said Friday, signaling that Japan remains under the pressure of deflation as it struggles to fight back the yen's rise.
But the pace of decline in the core nationwide CPI, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, contracted from the 1.1 percent fall the previous month partly due to rise in electricity bills.
The headline reading was in line with the average market forecast in a Kyodo News survey. The index stood at 99.1 against the base of 100 for 2005, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said in a preliminary report. (PNA/Kyodo)
