It is to the uninitiated. But those familiar with the language of call centers, and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), medical transcription in BPO lingo is just another pedestrian term for medical secretary in the 21st century.
In Cebu and Manila, the next big thing in call center courses is the MT or Medical Transcription.
Since it is a new calling, the manpower requirement for MTs abroad increased considerably, so much so that it has become a course of choice in the call center business.
It is this big demand for MTs that prompted a group of Boholano entrepreneurs to establish a training school for MTs with program fees that fit the budget of the mainstream market.
Thus, the Bohol Powerhouse Scholastics, Inc. (BPSI) was born.
Located in downtown Tagbilaran City, BPSI recently opened its doors to prospective MT enrollees. With the end in view of providing MT courses even to high school graduates or those who want to pursue an MT profession even those who have not earned credits in higher education. The BPSI Medical Transcription training program was launched recently at their training center at Ramvil Building, CPG Avenue.
In a statement, Bohol Powerhouse Scholastics, Inc. Director Danny C. Nazareno, MA said that the Province of Bohol has to be provided with a good training center for MTs, especially that MT companies are now looking at Central Visayas, as one of their preferred sites for operations.
Nazareno, together with a group of medical doctors, nurses and some businessmen, has started to set up the training facility early last month, with training courses pegged at as low as P5,000.
Medical Transcription (MT) outsourcing service is the process of converting voice dictation (typically either cassette or digital forms) into a permanent written record utilizing word processing equipment and software.
Although a Medical Transcription job highly requires a medical background most especially in physiology and anatomy and good grammar skills, the BPSI training modules are also designed for students who do not have medical background.
This service developed after the United States government amended the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) under the administration of then US President Bill Clinton in 1996.
This law ensures the continuity of healthcare coverage for individuals changing jobs and includes a provision that impacts on the management of health information, seeks to simplify the administration of health care insurance, and also aims to combat waste, fraud and abuse in health insurance and healthcare.
The Philippines, which is known for good English speakers, is one of the targets for American hospitals and clinics for MT outsourcing.

This is also in support to the poverty alleviation program of the provincial government of Bohol through job creation. Governor Erico Aumentado has been bullish about providing job opportunities to Boholanos through ecotourism, agriculture and recently the Information Technology (IT) industry.
Boholanos, after at least three months of MT training, can now work at home as medical transcriptionists. Working at home would be more lucrative although the search for clients online is challenging and sometimes tricky. An MT graduate can also work in production units in Cebu and nearby areas. Most call centers now in Cebu have accepted MT outsourcing projects.
Average rate is at $0.12 per line. Above average experienced MTs who are able to do 500 lines in a regular day would mean P2,700 a day just by working at home.
An estimated 6,700 hospitals, clinics, HMOs are still in the process of complying HIPAA law in the US. This has brought a huge opportunity for Filipinos to capture the multi million dollar outsourcing jobs that can even be done at home.
