The Department of Trade and Industry is organizing the
Market Week Philippines, the biggest domestic trade event to showcase the products of more than 400 micro,
small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from the home, fashion and food sectors of the country’s 17 regions.
“We have organized this event not only to support the MSMEs in marketing their products but to promote entrepreneurship, and boost the economy in the countryside,†Undersecretary Merly M. Cruz said.
The fair will be held on September 19 to 23, 2012 at the Megatrade Halls 1 to 3, SM Megamall (Building B) in Mandaluyong City.
This fair will feature a wide array of products such as fresh and processed food, footwear, apparel, accessories, jewelry, furniture, furnishings, home décor, gifts and houseware, holiday décor and health and wellness products. It will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and admission is free.
The four-day fair will also set up special booths that will showcase the prototypes developed for selected MSMEs and two special settings featuring water hyacinth products and bayong.
“We have featured water hyacinth products from CALABARZON (the Region IVA, comprising Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon and Rizal) that was developed from the Water Lily Development Project conceptualized in 2009. The DTI in Laguna come up with emergency employment projects and livelihood programs to mitigate the adverse effect of the recent
global financial crisis to the local economy,†Cruz said.
This project is a component of the Laguna Livelihood Emergency Accelerated Program (LEAP), which aims to clean up the Laguna Lake by producing value-added products from water hyacinth.
With the significant contribution to the economy of the nine coastal towns of Laguna, the Water Hyacinth Development Program was included as one of the national one town one product (OTOP) flagship programs of DTI in 2010.
This program also carried the advocacy to shift from the use of the traditional,
non-biodegradable plastic materials to the eco-friendly water hyacinth.
From 2010 to the first half of 2012, the program created 3,021 jobs and recorded P13.77 million in investments and P21.12 million in domestic sales.
The products from water hyacinth include basket, fashion bags, file folder, wallet, gown, footwear, fruit tray, table mats and runners, furniture, fertilizer, and green charcoal.
