Japan introduced a feed-in tariff scheme for renewable energy on Sunday to help spread the use of clean energy as the government seeks to reduce the nation's dependency on nuclear power in the wake of the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident.
The scheme requires utilities to buy all electricity generated from such renewable sources as solar, wind, water and geothermal power at preset premiums for up to 20 years, with costs to be passed on to consumers.
With generous feed-in tariff rates being offered, there has been a rush of construction of solar power plants.
SB Energy Corp., a Softbank Corp. subsidiary, held ceremonies in Kyoto and Gunma prefectures Sunday to commemorate the start of operation of its mega solar plants there. - PNA, source
