The Philippines ranked eighth out of 135 countries in the World Economic Forum's 2012 Global Gender Gap Index.

"The Philippines remains the highest-ranking country from Asia in the Index. It ranks first on both education and health and is also among the top 20 on economic participation and political empowerment," WEF said.

The Philippines ranking was better than Singapore (55th), Thailand (65th), Vietnam, (66th), Indonesia, (97th) and Malaysia (100th).

The Global Gender Gap Index examines the gap between men and women in four fundamental categories (sub indexes): economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival and political empowerment.

The WEF report said the Philippines is the only country in Asia this year to have closed the gender gap in both education and health.

The Philippines also performs in the top 10 of the following indicators: legislators, senior officials and managers, literacy rate, enrolment in secondary education and years with female head of state.

Iceland topped the global gender gap rankings followed by Findland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

Countries in the bottom 10 are Yemen (135th), Pakistan (134th), Chad (133rd), Syria (132nd), Saudia Arabia (131st), Cote d' Ivoire (130th), Morroco (129th), Mali (128th), Iran (127th) and Egypt (126th).

The report also said that countries that have made investments in women’s health and education and generally see the returns on this investment in terms of women’s economic and political participation include the Nordic countries, the United States and the Philippines.
