General Santos City (1 December 2005) -- Republic Act 8792, otherwise known as the Electronic Commerce Act, directed all government agencies to transact government business and/or perform governmental functions using the form of electronic data messages or electronic documents.

The law is simply a concrete government response to the Internet phenomenon.

"Never before in the history has one invention made such a dramatic impact," Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 12 Regional Director Ibrahim Guaimadel, quipped.

"We, in DTI 12, can not afford Soccsksargen Region to be left behind," he declared.

"As lead agency in implementing the e-Commerce Law, we can not discount the fact that due to valid financial constraints, some government agencies are not yet in full compliance," Guaimadel said.

Three web portals have already been created in the region to cater to the virtual or Internet community.

www.sme12.ph is designed to focus on small and medium enterprises, regional industry development, trade promotions and investment generations, among others.

Local businessmen, foreigners, researchers and students may use and be updated with the different helpful profiles, directories and information posted.

On the other hand, consumerism and trade regulation would be highlighted in www.consumer12.net being maintained by the region's consumer groups.

Aside from the local government units, the national government agencies of agriculture, environment and natural resources, trade and industry, and health are also assisting this consumer portal.

On its part, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry is believed to thrive because of the existing resources the region can offer. (DTI-GSC/PIA-Sargen)
