Thanks for this info, Blaue!  When we remit money to home, our remittance center uses the PNB New York conversion rate.  Today the conversion was pegged at 40 pesos for a US Dollar.

Wall St dips after Fed says inflation woes remain
02/07/2008 | 09:16 AM

NEW YORK - Wall Street pulled back for the third straight day Wednesday as many investors, still uneasy about the U.S. economy, sold off after a Federal Reserve official suggested rising inflation could prevent the central bank from making further interest rate cuts.

Although the economic slowdown is a big concern, ''we must not lose sight of the other part of the Fed's dual mandate, which is price stability,'' Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia President Charles Plosser said, according to Dow Jones Newswires. The economy has been weakening but costs remain high, leading some economists to believe that the United States is headed for a troubling predicament known as stagflation.

Plosser's comments were not surprising, particularly since he is known for being more apt to argue against a rate cut than other Fed members. Nonetheless, the speech, along with a dismal sales report from Macy's, sapped some of Wall Street's relief Wednesday over better-than-expected fourth-quarter productivity and labor cost data and profit results from Walt Disney Co.

''It just shows you the market's really skittish and temperamental,'' said Jim Herrick, director of equity trading at Baird & Co. ''I really believe the market is driven by emotion, that there's this want to test the lows again.''

After climbing until early afternoon Wednesday, stocks switched gears and began extending the losses they made Tuesday, when the Dow Jones industrial average suffered its biggest percentage drop since Feb. 27, 2007. The trigger that day was the Institute for Supply Management's report of a surprising January contraction in the US service sector, news that bolstered the argument that the nation is in recession.

''There's no smoking gun here; we get one bad number, one good number... We're probably going to chop around here until investors get a better feel on this recession-or-no-recession question,'' said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors.

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow fell 65.03, or 0.53 percent, to 12,200.10, after rising more than 100 points in earlier trading.

On Tuesday, the blue-chip index dropped 370 points, or 2.93 percent, and on Monday it lost 108 points. Because it rallied so strongly last week, it remains above the 15-month trading low it sank to in late January.

Broader stock indicators also gave up gains Wednesday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 10.18, or 0.76 percent, to 1,326.46, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 30.82, or 1.33 percent, to 2,278.75. - AP

Corporate Net foreign buying in local bourse fell 18.9% in 2007
02/07/2008 | 06:25 PM

Net foreign buying in the Philippine Stock Exchange dropped 18.9 percent last year to P55.55 billion owing to the massive net foreign selling in the last two months of 2007.

Based on PSE data, net foreign selling amounted to P8.54 billion last November, its second worst one-month level, and another P8.15 billion the following month for a total of P16.69 billion in both months.

It was the biggest amount of net foreign selling for any two-month period in the record books of the PSE.

The selling frenzy continued in December as it only worsened last January, when stock prices retreated by 10 percent. That month, net foreign selling reached P11.59 billion to surpass the P9.4-billion net foreign selling record set in October 2003.

Lim warned that if the trend continues, the PSE will lose in six months all the net foreign buying that the stock market piled up last year.

“To help grasp the gravity of the situation, let me point out that net foreign buying in 2005 amounted to P23.53 billion; and we were then very happy at that time. Yet the foreign investments we lost in the past three months or since November exceeded all the net foreign buying that made us all happy in 2005," he said.

Net foreign buying is the difference between total foreign buying against total foreign selling.

PSE records showed that total foreign buying last year jumped 95 percent to P680.33 billion from P348.97 billion a year ago. Total foreign selling surged 122.7 percent to P624.76 billion from P280.48 billion.

Last January total foreign buying amounted to only P34.21 billion against P45.8 billion in total foreign selling.

Despite this, local stockbrokers projected the PSE index to end 2008 at the 3,700 level, saying that the “bull run is not yet over."

At a briefing on Thursday, Francisco Liboro, Association of Securities Analysts of the Philppines
(ASAP) president and PCCI Securities president, told reporters that a recovery in the US economy is seen in the second half of the year, thus, lending support to Wall Street and even the local bourse.

“The year-end target is 3,700, subject to review after the first half ," he said.

Liboro added that the forecast has already factored in the political tension brought about by the ouster of Pangasinan Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr. as speaker of the House and the revelations by I.T. consultant Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr. about the $329.5-million National Broadband Network deal with Chinese company ZTE Corp.

“Personally, I think the political tension is the same as what we had for a couple of years now. Now of it's going to be a tipping point, that I don't know. I'm not saying that there won't be outrage. There will be outrage bu translating that to an upheaval is another thing," he said. - Cheryl Arcibal, GMANews.TV

Just would like to add,
Recently, some Business men accept Euro cash in New York City, might not be a bad move.
But it's still pretty scary for the Americans to think about the current value of the dollar.

I am thinking about what Beth said that "some businessmen accept Euro cash in New York City..."  Are these businessmen into exchanging currencies?  Since US Dollar is the official currency here, it is but right to use the official currency in this country.  I remember one time, a Mexican pizza man in California decided to accept Mexican pesos as tender for his goods.  It generated bad reaction from the people.  I don't really know if this is a violation to any law though.

Hello, Beth!  Thanks for the link.  I guess there's nothing wrong with this ha but when a foreigners/tourists from other countries (like Philippine pesos, for example) take their own currencies to these stores and they don't honor them, that's when this racial discrimination comes in.  Oh well.

For me, so far this is the only international money I've ever known that's been accepted here in the US.  I think the reason why they're taking Euros it's because of the dollar versus euro exchange rates especially that it's useful when Americans go to Europe nowadays. However,  I don't think this will happen if the dollar wasn't low to a Euro exchange.
