Canadian stocks gained for a second day on Tuesday. The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed up 40.05 points, or 0.32 percent, at 12,575.64.
Eight out of 12 sectors on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) registered gains on with the index measuring the telecommunication services sector rising 1.31 percent. The gains and losses of all the other sectors were less than one percent.
Rogers Communications Inc., Canada's largest wireless carrier, added 1.86 percent. BCE Inc. climbed 1.55 percent.
Bank of Montreal increased 1.03 percent.
Canadian National Railway Company declined 1.47 percent. Canadian pacific Railway Ltd. dropped 1.49 percent.
First Quantum Minerals Ltd. tumbled 3.73 percent.
Agrium Inc., Canada's second-biggest fertilizer producer, surged 5.32 percent after corn futures rose to a two year high. Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc., the world's largest fertilizer producer, rose 1.02 percent.
On the currency front, the Canadian dollar appreciated against its U.S. counter part on Tuesday.
One U.S. dollar was buying 1.0099 Canadian dollars at 5 p.m. local time (2100 GMT), compared with one U.S. dollar buying 1.0108 Canadian dollars on Friday. (PNA/Xinhua)
