The World's 12 Richest People in 2008
Source: Forbes.com
For the first time ever, the tally of the world's billionaires crossed into four figures, reaching 1,125. Americans still occupy 469 of the list's slots, but that's down two percentage points from last year. In total, we identified 226 new billionaires, 70% of whom come from the U.S., Russia, China and India.
After 13 years at the top, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is no longer the world's richest man. That honor now belongs to his friend and sometimes bridge partner Warren Buffett.
Riding the surging price of Berkshire Hathaway stock, Buffett has seen his fortune swell to an estimated $62 billion, up $10 billion from a year ago.
Gates is now worth $58 billion and is ranked third richest in the world. He is up $2 billion from a year ago, but would have been as rich--or richer--than Buffett, had Microsoft not made an unsolicited bid for Yahoo! at the beginning of February. Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helú now ranks as the world's second richest person with a net worth of $60 billion.

After 13 years at the top, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is no longer the world's richest man. That honor now belongs to his friend and sometimes bridge partner Warren Buffett. Bill Gates is ranked only third, next to Mexico’s Carlos Slim Helu. Warren Buffet’s fortune is estimated to be $62 billion (P2.6 trillion), higher by $10 billion from a year ago. The net worth of telecom magnate Carlos Slim Helu is estimated at $60B while Bill Gate’s wealth stood at $58B.
It is interesting to note that only four (4) among the dozen richest persons inherited their fortune. The other eight (

are self-made billionaires, like our very own Lucio Tan and Henry Sy, who are the only Filipinos to make the billionaires list in 2008. Three (3) of the top 12 were also school dropouts, including Bill Gates. Kaya hindi tayo dapat mawalan ng pag-asa na umasenso kahit ano pa man ang ating natapos o kahit mahirap ang kalagayan natin ngayon.
