PAGBANHAW: MARIBOJOC RISES FROM THE RUINS
Remembering October 15, 2013, the day an intensity 7.2 struck Bohol and neighboring islands.
It was also the 153rd anniversary of the founding of Maribojoc, Bohol, as a "pueblo" which was on October 15, 1860.
We wish to thank all those who supported and encouraged Bohol islanders to stand again after the disaster.
When a powerful earthquake struck Bohol on October 15, 2015, it brought extensive damage to many of the province’s heritage structures.
The Sta. Cruz Parish Church of Maribojoc, which was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines on May 5, 2010, was leveled to the ground.
Reconstruction of the heritage structure had been undertaken by the National Museum of the Philippines with work commencing in 2017. The reconstruction project entailed planning by the NMP architects, engineers and conservators, as well as consultations with technical experts, cultural workers and local stakeholders.
The church complex of Maribojoc includes the stone masonry church and convent, its side plazas, and the stone stairway at the back of the church leading to the town’s port.
The rebuilding of the church structure involved monumental feats all aimed at reviving the country’s unique built cultural heritage for future generations to cherish and enjoy, and use to strengthen their faith as well.
The reconstructed Sta. Cruz Parish Church of Maribojoc had been turned over December 12, 2021 by the National Museum of the Philippines, which took charge of the construction and facilitated its financing, to the Archdiocese of Tagbilaran.
