2 Bol-anons Died After Eating Butete
« on: July 03, 2012, 07:04:18 AM »
by Bohol Chronicle / MABINI, Bohol – Two have died while two others remain in critical condition at the Gov. Celestino Gallares Regional Hospital after eating the lethal puffer fish, popularly known here as “butete”, in Barangay Marcelo, Mabini.

The fatalities are identified as Helen Hamin, 40, of Barangay Marcelo; and Marvin Isarsa, of barangay San Roque, of the same town.

According to the Mabini Municipal DSWD office, that fisherman Gomer Hamin, husband of Helen, brought home the puffer fish cooked with coconut milk, which they had as viand for lunch together with a relative Raul Hamin and Isarsa on Tuesday.

Two hours after having lunch, the victims felt dizzy and stiffness of their extremities and other parts of their body and were rushed to the Candijay District Hospital but two of them were already dead on arrival.

The two other victims were brought to the GCGRH for intensive treatment and are still in critical condition.

Puffer fish or “butete”, are carriers of tetrodotoxin, one of nature's deadliest toxins.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

about butete (english, pufferfish; japanese, fugu)

Fugu is a Japanese dish prepared from the meat of pufferfish. Because pufferfish is lethally poisonous if prepared incorrectly, fugu has become one of the most celebrated and notorious dishes in Japanese cuisine.

Puffer Fish contain the poison tetrodotoxin. Tetrodotoxin is a very potent neurotoxin and shuts down electrical signaling in nerves by binding to the pores of sodium channel proteins in nerve cell membranes. The tetrodotoxin is very stable and not affected by the heat of cooking. It does not cross the blood-brain barrier, leaving the victim fully conscious while paralyzing the remainder of the body.

If an ingested dose of the fugu's poison is lethal, as more and more muscles are paralyzed, symptoms may include dizziness, exhaustion, headache, nausea or difficulty breathing. For 50% to 80% of the victims, death follows within four to 24 hours. The victim remains fully conscious throughout most of the ordeal, but cannot speak or move due to paralysis, and soon also cannot breathe and subsequently asphyxiates. If the victim survives the first 24 hours, he or she usually recovers completely.

There is no known antidote, and treatment consists of emptying the stomach, feeding the victim activated charcoal to bind the toxin and taking standard life-support measures to keep the victim alive until the effect of the poison has worn off. Japanese toxicologists in several medical research centers are currently working on developing an antidote to tetrodotoxin.

As mentioned above, commercially available fugu in supermarkets or restaurants is very safe and, while not unheard of, poisoning from these products is very rare. Most deaths from fugu occur when untrained people catch and prepare the fish, accidentally poisoning themselves. In some cases they even eat the highly poisonous liver on purpose as a delicacy. As not all fishes are equally poisonous, this may not always lead to death, but sometimes give little more than the desired numbness on the lips and tongue while eating and shortly thereafter. However, in many cases this numbness of the lips is only the first step of a lethal fugu poisoning.

here's something related, lil.

Farmer dies, four neighbors fall ill after eating ‘dalapugan’ fish

Cebu Daily News
Friday, June 29th, 2012

A FARMER in Oslob town, southern Cebu died while four others fell ill after they ate fish locally known as dalapugan.

Police identified the fatality as Epitacio Ferrolino, 37, a resident of barangay Cansaloay.

The fish itself is not a poisonous variety and it’s possible that the fish was spoiled or had eaten something poisonous, said PO3 Nelson Saquibal of the Oslob police in Cebuano.

Epitacio ate the internal organs of the fish which was cooked in vinegar as inun-onan.

His neighbor Max Filosopo, 35, bought it from the Oslob public market around 10 a.m. last Tuesday.

He invited Epitacio and his 22-year-old pregnant wife Angelita, Epitacio’s 65-year-old mother Consuelo, and Juanita Estinor, 62, to his house for lunch.

About an hour after the lunch, Filosopo and his neighbors started vomiting.

As a remedy, they drank native medicinal oil locally known as “lana.”

Their condition improved after they drank lots of water.

Epitacio continued vomiting until 3 p.m when he could no longer talk and his hands went numb, said police.

He was brought by his neighbors to the Oslob District Hospital around 9 p.m. where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Gina Javier.

Police said they are still waiting for the result of the medical examination to determine the cause of death.

Police recovered a small portion of the inun-onan meal which was submitted to the Bureau of Food and Drugs for examination. /REPORTER RHEA RUTH V. ROSELL

Poisonous fish trivia

Most venomous fish come from the Indo-Pacific, off eastern and southern Africa, Australia, Polynesia, the Philippines, Indonesia and southern Japan. About 50,000 people a year suffer from stings, or envenomations, with an array of symptoms like pain, fainting, blisters, fever, convulsions, breathing trouble and sometimes even death.

nahibung bitaw ko... wa man hinoon sa lista sa poisonous fish in the world ang batfish, mao nga makatuo ko sa theory sa recent batfish poisoning sa cebu (as pointed out in the news item) nga tingali ang fish mismo ang nakakaon ug poison unya napasa sa nikaon sa fish, especially the person who ate the entrails nga maoy naantimano.

kun mao, na, mora ra diay ta anig nag-russian roulette kun mokaon tag isda kay wa man ta kahibawo asa nilay nakalamoy ug hilo.
