The Beard: A character who pretends to be another's Significant Other in order to perpetrate a deception.

The term originated in the gay community, where a Beard is a woman who pretends to be a gay man's lover to make him appear heterosexual to others. The term is used because the woman, like a beard, makes the gay man look more masculine.
