A Pilgrim's Destination on Cabilao Island in Loon, Bohol
« on: July 11, 2010, 08:25:55 PM »
Chapel of the Holy Cross

Cabilao was sparsely populated during the administration of the Philippines by the Spaniards. The island residents, mostly belonging to fishing households, would sail to the poblacion or town center of Loon to perform their duties and obligations as Catholic Christians, particularly during major celebrations and rituals.

One day, a group of fishermen from Cambaquiz composed of Doroteo, Benigno, Osong and Victorino launched a net into the sea and got nothing except a wooden cross that they immediately threw back into the water. They launched the net again, but after two more tries they still got nothing but the cross. Baffled, Doroteo instructed his comrades to load the cross into the boat. Immediately thereafter, they were able to haul a big catch. Sensing a miracle, Doroteo brought the wooden crucifix home and placed it near the hearth to dry.

In one of his dreams, Doroteo was instructed to build a sanctuary for the symbol of Christ. He told his fishing mates right away about his dream and they all got together to build a small chapel made of bamboo, nypa and salirap or woven coconut fronds.

In 1907 a bigger chapel was finally completed in Cambaquiz. Meanwhile, construction of a chapel for the image of San Roque was started in the village of Cabacungan on the other side of the island. With the project not prospering due to unexplainable circumstances, the devotees requested for their patron’s image to be enthroned in the chapel in Cambaquiz. There was no further argument as there was no other chapel on the island. As a result, it was agreed that the feast of the Holy Cross be observed on May 7 and that of San Roque on May 8.

In later years, when it was decided that a separate parish be established in Cabilao, the chapel in Cambaquiz was considered the most appropriate site. A problem, however, emerged as a deed of donation in regard to the lot could not be produced. The parish church, still dedicated to the Holy Cross, was finally established in the adjacent barangay of Talisay. The church in Cambaquiz remains an important place of worship especially because of the reported miracles attributed to the Holy Cross while it was still enthroned thereat.

Miracles attributed to the Holy Cross in Cambaquiz

Inse Ipay grew up to be sickly and her parents had no other recourse than to bring her in front of the Holy Cruz in Cambaquiz. Her mother appealed, “Most Holy Cross of the Lord Jesus I offer Thee my daughter Josefa to You. If You want her to join You in heaven, please get her now. If You want her to live, please heal her so that she can serve You for the rest of her life.” Inse Ipay got well. She is now 65 years old and serving the Lord in the same chapel.

Manang Ayang had been serving the Lord through various activities in the Holy Cross chapel despite the fact that she had a lot of children to look after and even if her husband was against it. She prayed hard for God to ease the burden of surviving amid poverty in her family and for her husband’s enlightenment. Her wish was granted. Her husband now goes to church. She also discovered that she was blessed with the gift of healing.

In 1994, the road in Cambaquiz was constructed. The workers made the chapel their abode during the night. They revealed that they would see a bright light emanating from the altar with a figure of a lady in the midst. It is worth noting that one of the representations of Mary, the mother of Jesus, is a lady clothed in light. Also, Cabilao belonged to the parish of the Our Lady of Light (Birhen sa Kasilak) before it was merged with Sandingan island to become a parish.

Julia Dogelda, a resident of nearby Pangangan island, told his uncle, Ambrosio Labesores, father of Inocencia, that she saw a bright light like a star forming a cross hovering above the chapel in Cambaquiz.

Henia and Cirilo sailed back home to Cabilao from Calape amid total darkness as they do not have any source of light. They prayed hard to the Holy Cross for help. Later their boat ran aground on the white sands of Cambaquiz. They thanked God through the symbol of His Son, the Holy Cross.

A woman from Davao suddenly arrived in Cambaquiz in 1998. She told the local residents that, after praying to God with all her heart, her gravely ill child recovered. After what seemed like a miraculous incident, she dreamt of going to an island in Bohol where the Holy Cross is venerated. Knowing that Cabilao is home of the Holy Cross Parish, she went to the seat of the parish in Talisay but found the church to be not the one that appeared in her dream. After having been told that another chapel exists in nearby Cambaquiz, she lost no time and proceeded to the latter. There she saw the coastal area, the white beach and the chapel just as they were described in her dream. She cried while embracing the wooden cross and profusely thanked the Lord for the miracles that happened in her life. The incident was witnessed by Inday Lolok, Anding Inday, Manang Ayang, and Prenda.

Junior Sordilla worked abroad as a marine engineer and seaman. On a dark stormy night, the ship he was aboard in suddenly stopped in the middle of nowhere. As chief engineer, he kept tinkering with the machine but failed to discern the problem. In silence he prayed for God’s help through the Holy Cross and suddenly felt his mind being enlightened. Looking up, he removed a lock-like contraption from the upper part of the machine and the engine was on again. Coming home to Cabilao, he paid homage and thanked the Holy Cross of Cambaquiz.

Bagyong, son of Palang, was caught in a storm while fishing. Afraid that big waves would take him to a faraway place, he thought of anchoring his boat to the bottom part of the payaw, a fish-attracting device made of a clump of bamboos with coconut fronds tied onto its upper end to serve as shelter and feeding area for fish. With the tug rope in hand and praying to the Holy Cross for help, he swam deep into the water to look for a strong base onto which he would securely tie his boat. He succeeded but only because he was aided by a bright light that looked like a cross which suddenly appeared underneath the stormy water.

Ondoy Ruiz, a seaman, revealed that a group of pirates sailed past his ship after he prayed hard to the Holy Cross to spare him and the other crew members of the havoc that the pirates would have wreaked on them and their vessel. In May 2008 he visited Cabilao and the chapel to thank the Lord for the safety he experienced at sea.

Diolito Murcia went with a group of fishermen on a fishing expedition in Tacloban in 2008. One night he became too tired, had fallen asleep, and accidentally fell into the sea. Realizing the dangerous situation he was in, he prayed to the Holy Cross for God to be on his side and for his colleagues to locate him.  He survived the harsh situation, sent money home, and instructed that a thanksgiving mass be celebrated.

Rudy, Diolito’s brother, was fishing in Davao when the engine of his boat suddenly stopped. He floated aimlessly in the sea, bearing the heat of the sun, the cold nights, and hunger. He prayed to the Holy Cross to save him and, after three days, rescue came. He sent money to his mother, Aya Payak, and requested her to sponsor a thanksgiving mass.

Residents of Cabilao attest to more miracles happening in their lives and in others’. They continually pray to the God through the mighty name of Jesus who died in the Holy Cross to save mankind. Their petitions are generally for safety, guidance, enlightenment and healing.
