The city government will give financial assistance to illegal fish pen operators so they can find alternative livelihood instead of doing unregulated cage operations along the Iloilo River.
Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog said he is planning to give the amount of P3,000 each to intended beneficiaries.
Earlier, he ordered the City Agriculturist Office to rid the riverbanks of fish pens and illegal settlers in order to clean the surroundings and preserve the river’s natural resources.
A total of 75 illegal fish pen operators mostly from South San Jose, Molo and Sooc, Arevalo have been identified by City Agriculturist Jose Gil Parreñas in his report to the local chief executive.
Parreñas met with the operators Tuesday to discuss the mayor’s alternative source of income for them.
Mabilog said Punong Barangay Genoveva Cabulong of Dungon-A in Jaro district, who has her own fish business, is giving an orientation to the affected operators and workers so they can find opportunities for work at the Iloilo Fish Port Complex. - PNA
