A village official was shot and critically wounded early Friday in a west coast village in this southern port city, a police official disclosed.
Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) director Sr. Supt. Edwin de Ocampo said the incident took place shortly after 6 a.m. Friday in Sitio Mantayabas, Barangay Baluno, 28 kilometers west of this city.
De Ocampo identified the victim as Felix Custodio, 50, the barangay chairman of Baluno, who suffered two bullet wounds in the head.
Investigation showed Custodio was walking home from his office at the Barangay Hall when shot with a caliber .38 revolver, De Ocampo said.
He said there could be two people behind the shooting of Custodio since the responding policemen have recovered a shotgun and a slipper few meters away from the crime scene.
He said the motive of the incident could be work-related citing the victim is against the illegal small scale mining in his barangay.
The barangay of Baluno, which is rich in natural resources like ore, zinc, lead and copper, was the home of the defunct Zambales Base Metal Incorporated (ZBMI) in the 1970s. (PNA)
