The Department of Agriculture (DA) is planning to establish 300 community-based organic fertilizer manufacturing in Western Visayas, which happens to be one of the components of the FIELDS program of the agency.
FIELDS stands for fertilizers, infrastructure, education/extension services, loan, dryers and seeds which are being made available by the DA to ensure higher agriculture production.
DA regional executive director Larry Nacionales said the initial 80 communities will be installed in Iloilo this month.
Each community after completion of training will be provided with facilities such as shredder machine, vermicast and a broiler that will be used for liquid.
“We are encouraging our farmers to minimize the use of inorganic fertilizer. This will not only augment their income but it can help address the problem on climate change,†he said.
Nacionales said that the use of organic fertilizer will be promoted in their Citizens Charter which will be presented during a forum with local government units and non-government organizations on July 30.
At present, organic fertilizers are being marketed through commercial suppliers.
Nacionales said there is a big market for organic producers in Panay because at present only about 20 percent are utilizing the product. (PNA)
