Members of the 4th Special Action Force Battalion of the Philippine National Police (PNP) based in the Police Regional Training Center in Barangay Mintal, Davao City recovered a cache of high- powered firearms about to be buried in the public cemetery at Barangay Rosary Heights Mother in Cotabato City Thursday evening following a tip from a concerned citizen.

Superintendent Fernando Ortega, commanding officer of the 4th SAF Battalion, said the contraband included five .50 caliber machine guns, one .30 caliber machine gun with tripod, one .30 caliber machine without a tripod, one eight- millimeter mortar tube, one 60-millimeter mortar with plate and tripod, one 60-millimeter mortar without plate and tripod, three assorted shotguns, nine spare barrels for .50 caliber machine gun, one rifle of an unknown caliber and a shovel.

He said all weapons are functional.

Ortega said investigators are still determining the possible owner of the contraband.

"No one was around when we arrived in the area, but there were indications that the perpetrators were about to bury the weapons," he said in a telephone conversation with Philippine National Police chief Director General Raul Bacalso.

Ortega revealed that their unit received the specific tip of the activity from a concerned citizen from the city, prompting the police to conduct an operation leading to the recovery.
