Vulnerable to HIV/AIDS
« on: August 29, 2012, 08:52:24 AM »
The Department of Health (DOH) Tuesday underscored the need for those who are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS to get themselves tested to help curb the epidemic in the country.

Dr. Gerald Belimac, program manager of the DOH’s National AIDS/Sexuality Transmitted Infection Prevention and Control Program, said while many people are now being tested for the AIDS virus because of increased awareness, many more others resist the testing.

“Ang unang challenge ngayon why we cannot meet that, we still have lower number, small number of people undergoing HIV testing. Dapat mas mapataas pa natin yon. Kaya we are continuously encouraging the Filipinos particularly those who have risk of having unprotected sex with other men to come out in the open and undergo HIV testing,” he said.

He said at risk of contracting the virus are those who have partners that are infected; men who have unprotected sex with men and those who engage in unprotected hetero-sexual sex.

The next problem, Belimac said is when those who were diagnosed with HIV virus do not want to avail of the free anti-retroviral therapy (ARV) by the DOH.

The expert said this is unfortunate because the price of ARV is going down. The cost of ARV per patient is US$ 100 for a year.

Belimac said stigma is still the primary reason why infected individuals do not want to go to treatment hubs.

“The fear of being discovered that they are infected because people will give meaning to their infection, bading yan. Their sexuality will be discovered. Another reason is denial. They are not ready to accept they are infected already with HIV,” Belimac said.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Researchers have identified a mysterious new disease that has left scores of people in Asia and some in the United States with AIDS-like symptoms even though they are not infected with HIV.

The patients' immune systems become damaged, leaving them unable to fend off germs as healthy people do. What triggers this isn't known, but the disease does not seem to be contagious.

This is another kind of acquired immune deficiency that is not inherited and occurs in adults, but doesn't spread the way AIDS does through a virus, said Dr. Sarah Browne, a scientist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

She helped lead the study with researchers in Thailand and Taiwan where most of the cases have been found since 2004. Their report is in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

"This is absolutely fascinating. I've seen probably at least three patients in the last 10 years or so" who might have had this, said Dr. Dennis Maki, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
