Violence vs women in west Visayas drops by 31.40%

ILOILO CITY -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) regional office in Western Visayas reported a 31.40 percent decline in cases of violence against women (VAW) in Western Visayas.

Inspector Joem Malong, chief of the Regional Women and Children Protection Desk, said they have been relentless in their campaign to protect the rights of women in the region and address all forms of VAW.

Malong said from January to October this year, 2,338 cases were recorded in the region, lower by 31.40 percent or 1,070 cases compared to the same period last year with 3,408 cases.

Iloilo province recorded 670 cases; Aklan, 533; Iloilo City, 472; Capiz, 393; Antique, 169; and Guimaras with 101 cases.

Majority of the VAW crimes committed were physical abuse with 1, 317 cases.

Meanwhile, Malong said the efficient campaign of the Duterte administration against illegal drugs was among the factors that contributed to the decrease in the number of cases.

“Somehow there is an effect because comparing to other years, this year recorded the biggest decrease in the number of cases,” she said.

Cases included those where husbands of victims were in their illegal drug list, especially during the Oplan Tokhang.

To attain the goal of zero cases of VAW in the region, an 18-day campaign will start here on November 25 until December 12 to raise awareness among stakeholders.

Regional offices of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Commission on Human Rights, and the PNP have scheduled a number of activities in the region to highlight the campaign.

A public forum dubbed “Sharing of Best Practices in Operating Barangay VAW Desks” will be staged on December 5 at the Casa Real Iloilo.

The activity will gather representatives from various local government units to discuss best practices in helping the victims of violence and to come up with initiatives to further decrease or eliminate crimes against women.

Other activities include poster making and jingle writing contests that will highlight not only the protection of women but also of children. (PNA) NOVEMBER 2017
