US Navy Destroyer Spotted Off Basilan And Sulu
« on: May 06, 2009, 09:31:38 PM »
A US Navy destroyer was deployed off Basilan and Sulu to assist in US training operations, a US military official confirmed yesterday.

Maj. John Hutcheson, public affairs chief of the Joint Special Operation Task Force-Philippines (JSOTF-P), said the US warship is in the area to support the training exercises of the US military unit under the JSOTF-P.

The USS Kidd, a fletcher-class destroyer, was spotted last Monday off the coast of this city. – Roel Pareño, Philippine Star

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

A Picture of the USS Kidd,

If the United States Navy would donate just 1 Aegis-class or Fletcher-class destroyer to the Philippine Navy, the Philippine Navy would be the strongest naval power in ASEAN.

Addendum:

There are actually 2 USS Kidds.

The first USS Kidd is of the older generation, of the Fletcher-class, which is a WWII generation destroyer. That older version was mothballed out of service.

The newer USS Kidd is part of the Arleigh Burke Aegis Destroyer-Class. A 4th generation US destroyer. With capability to steam through the pacific within mere days. Its a nuclear-powered ship, energy efficient, and can transport humanitarian aid as well as deploy military units within a day's reach from the US Pacific and Atlantic Command.

The same ship was sent to Indonesia to rebuild and help recover bodies in Indonesia after the Tsunami 2004. As well as sent over $50 Billion worth in food and medical supplies that the United States Government supplied Indonesia, India, Thailand and Bangladesh.

Again, to correct the misinterpretations of some. The US Navy has always been for reconstructive means, and nation building, let alone solidifies the US's championing of humanitarian causes through its channels.

The same in Basilan and Sulu.

God Bless the United States and the Philippines!

speaking of naval warfare material, can you  believe that the flagship of the philippine navy (RPS kalantiaw) back in the late 70s or early 80s was sunk not through a fierce naval battle but by bad weather?

It is unfortunate, but most of the ships in the Philippine Navy are cannon-class ships. Of vintage WWII era.

Since 2004, the United States and the Philippines have worked together to step up to the need to patrol and enforce the vast waterways of the Philippines.

In 2004, the USN donated a missile-patrol ship to the Philippines, a Cyclone-class ship.

The new missile patrol ship has been effective in the Philippine's ability to fight piracy, as well as uphold Philippine naval territorial right.

Some pictures:

The cyclone-class ship along with the 2 peacock class frigates that the Philippines acquired from the British Navy in 1997 have been the basis for the modernizing Philippine Navy.

The Philippine's cyclone-class ship has ability to shoot down enemy/hostile planes and missiles via its ARM defense, as well as phalanx anti-air guns.
One of the possible upgrades the Cyclone-class ship has, which will be beneficial for the Philippine Navy, is EXOCET anti-ship missiles. If the Philippine navy upgrades its cyclone-class ship with 5-10 exocet missiles, it will have the ability to sink even a much larger frigate and destroyer class.

An excellent defensive arm. The Philippine Navy has plans in acquiring 2-3 more Cyclone-class missile ships from the United States, which will overall strengthen the power and capability of the Philippine Navy.

It will make the PN's ability to track, isolate, and neutralize foreign pirates, smugglers etc easier.

The Philippines' BRP General Mariano Alvarez , is the newly acquired Cyclone-class missile patrol boat. This is a 4th generation patrol ship, which was developed by the United States Navy as a way to outmaneuver and ouspeed any foreign frigate.

The defense capabilities of the BRP General Mariano Alvarez include:
1 × MK 96 autocannon
1 × MK 38 25 mm autocannon
5 × .50 caliber machine guns
2 × MK 19 40 mm automatic grenade launchers
2 × M60 machine guns
ARM launch pods
(possible EXOCET anti-ship missile upgrades)
The Sperry Vision 2100M combat system employs the navigational radars and the Sperry Voyage Management System integrated navigation and control system as a combat data suite. Ammunition supply includes 2,000 rounds 25-mm, 2,000 rounds .50 cal, 2,000 rounds 7.62-mm, and 1,000 40-mm grenades. Plans to fit Hellfire missiles possible.

Speed  BRP General Mariano Alvarez:
35 knots (full steam) -- which is very fast

Propulsion
Four Paxman diesels; four shafts; 3,350 shaft horsepower (2.50 MW)

Crew:

Four officers, 24 enlisted personnel

Overall, this ship carries a lethal punch. A 4th generational missile-class ship that the United States Navy personally uses on the Gulf as an excellent anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and anti-ship force. Overall, the Cyclone-class provides a much needed missile defense for the modernizing Philippine Navy.

BRP General Mariano Alvarez (PS-38)

PS-38's harpoon guns. Can knock out even an air-to-ship missile threat. Meaning any Migfighters or missiles that pose a threat can be shot from the air.

PS-38 on full steam.
Beautiful ship. The pride of the Philippine Navy.

speaking of naval warfare material, can you  believe that the flagship of the philippine navy (RPS kalantiaw) back in the late 70s or early 80s was sunk not through a fierce naval battle but by bad weather?

Bolingitboy, during the 1960s', the Philippine Navy was the envy of the region, although most of its naval ships were mostly WWII American-donations, it still boasted destroyers, frigates, and a fleet of patrol ships. The navy was the inspiration of the newly independent South East Asian nations of the day. Indonesia, actually, in 1961 signed a joint-protection treaty with the Philippines as it needed the help of the Philippine Navy's mighty arm to suppress insurrectionist activity near the celebes.

Since 1960's, the Philippine Navy has largely remained stagnant. Most of the naval ships that the Philippines has are old ships that no other nation in the world would even commission due to sea-unworthiness. Most of the frigates in the Philippine Navy, like the one you mentioned, the RPS Datu Kalantiaw, have only been kept afloat by constant repair by the Philippine Navy.

These ships steam at 15-20 knotts, which are slow in international standards, and have no missile protection or air protection besides cannons. What are cannons going to do to a ship cruising at 30 knotts and carrying anti-ship missiles?

The Philippines did acquire 2 peacock-class frigates, some fast attack ships, but mostly the acquisition of the Cyclone-Class missiple patrol boat from the United States has finally provided the Philippine Navy with a missile umbrella, so to say.

These 3 new ships are the basis for the future development of the Navy. Focusing more on internal security and territorial security than external projections.

What powers these war boats for their high speed is the airplane fuel put into them instead of bunker fuels ussed by many ships at its weight or more today.

I am glad to see the Navy assisting in training people how to fight against terrorism so the people of the Philippines can become better protected.

Philippine country is lucky we are good allies relationships with them.

very informative, lorenzo.

"Speed  BRP General Mariano Alvarez:

the PN boat you describe has speed that is similar to that of the supercat that regularly plies between cebu and bohol. very fast indeed.

In fact, the Philippine Navy has been in need of a fast attack ship for decades now, particularly with the firepower of the PS-38. Its speed, extreme maneuverability and fire power has made it possible to assess the piracy and smuggling problem of the south. Its the kind of ship that the Philippine Navy really needs, its' not too expensive--in fact the Navy can afford 5-6 more of these ships to augment the surface fleet. And at the same time, if upgraded to the brim, these ships have the ability to take down destroyers and frigates and neutralize any air threat.

It's a perfect solution to the Philippine's situation; being an archipelago, the navy needs fast-attack ships that augments the defensive capability.

Bolingitboy, there are upgrades on motor power for the Cyclone Class-ships; the recent development of a newer Cyclone-class by the US Navy can cruise at speeds of 40 knots. And can hit full steam at 50+ knots.

Quick turns and speed can evade even modern ARM missile threats; an answer to the Chinese Jiangzu corvettes -class.

The Philippine Navy, am sure, will purchase more Cyclone-Class ships.

The United States Navy is so many leagues ahead of the world navies, in that it has already developed destroyers, and destroyer escorts as well as cruisers and submarines that run primarily on purely nuclear power. There no longer is a need to run on non-renewable fuel.

The newest addition to the United States Navy, the USS George H. Bush Sr, is a nuclear-powered super-aircraft carrier. With emergency rocket fuel reserves. But draws its power from its nuclear reactors inside the belly of the juggernaut.

Its air defense is practically impregnable, and can reach its home port from San Francisco to Midway within less a week's time.

The carrier in the picture is a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class CVN. (Super aircraft carrier)
The ship in the foreground is an Aegis-class Arleigh Burke Destroyer.
Both of these warships are nuclear powered. Energy efficiency.

Its amazing.

I like reading stories of Filipino Army building schools in war-torn Basilan and helping to put a sense of peace in the region.

Let us pray lang that the kids in Basilan and in southern Mindanao find way to education and to broaden their minds instead of adhering to fanatical militant islamofascism.

I pray for a peace in Mindanao, and the only way we can do this, I think, is by helping to rebuild the war torn areas, as well as to put the pressure on the MILF and the Abu Sayaf. Poverty, in the end, is the major reasons why they take up arms and resort to jihadist orientation.

Hunger, and depravity can drive innocent souls to the wrong side. Easily influenced by the wrong people.

Basilanero kids in school.

Just some corrections, an Arleigh Burke class destroyer is not nuclear powered. It is powered by four GE LM 2500 gas turbines, each rated at 33,600hp with a power turbine speed of 3,600rpm.

Also, cyclone class patrol boats are not missile boats. They are still categorized as gunboats with no missiles used as armaments. Its standard weapons are:
1 × MK 38 MOD 2 GWS (M242 cannon)
1 × MK 38 25 mm autocannon
5 × .50 caliber machine guns
2 × MK 19 40 mm automatic grenade launchers
2 × M240B machine guns

Sorry, just couldn't resist correcting erroneous details.  ;)

The one beside USS Kidd destroyer is not a sister ship (same class) but a Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser. A cruiser and a destroyer are two categories.

Correction: Also the caption in the picture of an aircraft carrier and an alleged Arleigh Burke class destroyer, it is not. Again, in the background is an Aegis equipped Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser. And, it is not nuclear powered. You can easily identify an Arleigh Burke destroyer by its single mast slightly inclined backward.

( "If the United States Navy would donate just 1 Aegis-class or Fletcher-class destroyer to the Philippine Navy, the Philippine Navy would be the strongest naval power in ASEAN." )

I'm pretty sure the Philippines would be the strongest not only naval but military (land and air) power in SEAsia. Imagine the capabilities of an Aegis-class destroyer, but then how can the Philippines maintain a billion dollar ship one engine (gas turbine) alone can consume at least (+-) 1000 gph of fuel in a speed of 29 to 30 knots not to mention full power and full speed. Plus one tomahawk costs at least 600 to 700 thousand dollars a piece (not really accurate) imagine the 30 forward and 60 aft of tomahawks (can't relly remember). You could build a hospital in the Philippines with just one worth of tomahawk missile.

( "The same ship was sent to Indonesia to rebuild and help recover bodies in Indonesia after the Tsunami 2004."

I don't think USS KIdd was part of that mission on the early stage or at the later stage or not at all. It was the Benfold, Shiloh, and the USNS Rainer who went to the Bandah Aceh, Indonesia within the critical 24hrs of the Tsunami. Well maybe in the clean up part of the operation.

I'm from Basilan and also part of me from Bohol (Tubigon because of my dad. Someone posted here (on a different topic) that Basilan should be wiped out of the map (because of the Abu Sayaff) hmmm

thanks Lorenzo good posts good luck
