THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) has filed smuggling charges against the owner of a used clothing or ukay-ukay store in Cagayan de Oro City at the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Cha Evangelos Tiu-Andit, owner of ERS Surplus on Gusa Highway, was charged with illegally importing a shipment of used clothing valued at P10 million.
The shipment arrived in a 40-foot container declared as containing bedsheets, pillowcases, and comforters.
It arrived at the Cagayan de Oro port last March 18.
A Customs broker, Yolanda Mondragon Narandan, was charged with Andit.
"I am warning all importers and traders, especially those involved in the illegal importation of used clothing to stop what they are doing. We will never compromise the interest of our local industries and for that we will not allow illegal importation of used clothing," said Customs Commissioner Alberto Lina in a statement. (Sunnex)
