The low pressure area (LPA) moving towards the Eastern Visayas and Caraga may hit ground either tomorrow night or Tuesday morning, DOST-Pagasa said on Sunday.
In 48 hours after forecasted landfall, Weather Specialist Ariel Rojas said, the LPA may strengthen into a tropical depression (to be named Agaton) while moving out of the Sulu Sea.
As a tropical depression, Rojas said the weather system may cause moderate to heavy rainfall over Visayas and Mindanao that may trigger floods and landslides. But some parts of these areas have been experiencing rains already before the entry of the LPA into the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
Rojas said the other cause of rainfall in the Visayas and Bicol region is the prevailing tail end of a cold front while trough extention of the incoming LPA may influence the scattering of rainshowers and thunderstorms over Northern Mindanao, Davao Regions and Caraga.
The location of the LPA, as estimated by DOST-Pagasa as of 3 pm, Sunday was 850 kilometers east of Surigao City.
Local governments in areas where the LPA (or tropical depression) is expected to pass were notified and preparing preventive measures.
DOST-Pagasa Weather Services Division Chief Esperanza Cayanan have been requesting the public to keep track of their latest forecasts and coordinate with their local governments for contigencies as well. (LP/PIA-Mimaropa)
